This Day That Year: Indian team register complete whitewash on Sri Lankan tour
The Indian Cricket Team created history as defeated the
hosts Sri Lanka in a one-off T20I match played at Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on 6th
September 2017.
Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to field
first. Upul Tharanga and Dickwella provided a flying start for Sri Lanka before
Bhuvneshwar Kumar got the breakthrough dismissing Tharanga. Munaweera looked in
great touch putting the Indian bowlers under pressure.
As wickets fell from another end, Munaweera looked
impressive with his stroke play and kept on ticking the scoreboard. He
completed his half-century off 26 balls making sure that Sri Lanka reached a competitive
total. The Indian bowlers made a strong comeback by picking wickets at regular
intervals and reduced Sri Lanka to 134 for 7.
The debutant Priyanjan and Isuru Udana hit some big blows at
the end to help Sri Lanka post 170 for 7 at the end of 20 overs. Both added unbeaten
36 runs for the 7th wicket.
Chasing 171 runs to win, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul gave the
team a flying start before Malinga got rid of Rohit. Rahul looked in great
touch hitting boundaries with ease. Malinga dismissed Rahul to leave India in
some trouble.
The Indian captain Virat Kohli came to the crease and played
with intent. He showed his class keeping the scoreboard ticking taking singles
and hitting boundaries. Kohli reached fifty off just 30 balls making the target
look easy. After completing the milestone, the Indian captain kept the momentum
along with Manish Pandey. He was finally dismissed for a superb 82 off 54 balls
including 7 fours and 1 six.
Kohli and Manish Pandey added 119 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Pandey completed his fifty off 36 balls and hit the winning runs. India
won the match by 7 wickets with 4 balls to spare. For his captain's knock, Kohli
was named the man of the match award.
It was an impressive tour for Virat Kohli led side as they
whitewashed Sri Lanka 3-0 in the Test series, 5-0 in the ODI series, and ended the
tour with a resounding win in the one-off T20I.
For his superb knock of 82, Kohli was named the man of the match award.
