This Day That Year: Zimbabwe stun Australia in the World T20

 

It was amazing scenes as Zimbabwe stunned Australia in their opening match of the inaugural World T20 to be played at Newlands, Cape Town on 12th September 2007.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting won the toss and decided to bat first. The decision did not pay off as the Aussies lost 3 early wickets of Matthew Hayden, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting to be in deep trouble at 19 for 3. The Zimbabwean bowlers kept a tight line and length not allowing the Australian batsmen to score runs easily.

Brad Hodge scored a brisk 35 not out off 22 balls while Andrew Symonds made 33 off 25 balls. It was a superb bowling effort by the Zimbabwean bowlers to restrict the Australian team to 138 for 9 in 20 overs. Elton Chigumbra grabbed 3 for 20 while Gary Brent took 2 for 19, Utseya and Hamilton Masakadza 1 each.

Chasing 139 runs to win, Vusi Sibanda and Brendon Taylor gave a flying start putting on 31 runs in just 3.5 overs laying a strong foundation. The Australian bowlers showed their class by picking wickets of Chibhabha, Taibu, Matsikenyeri to leave Zimbabwe in trouble at 70 for 4. Hamilton Masakadza and Brendon Taylor steadied the innings putting on 53 runs for the 5th wicket. Taylor looked composed to reach his fifty off 38 balls.

The match went right down the wire as Zimbabwe needed 12 runs off 6 balls. Brendon Taylor hit a lovely boundary to put Nathan Bracken under pressure. With 4 runs required from 2 deliveries, it was leg bye that sealed Zimbabwe a famous win by 4 wickets with 1 ball to spare.

This was Zimbabwe’s first win over Australia in a T20I format. It was an amazing performance to stun a formidable Australian side.

For his superb 60* off 45 balls, Brendon Taylor was named the man of the match award.

Zimbabwe 139 for 5 in 19.5 overs ( Brendon Taylor 60*, Masakadza 27, Stuart Clark 2/22) beat Australia 138 for 9 in 20 overs ( Brad Hodge 35*, Andrew Symonds 33, Elton Chigumbura 3/20, Gary Brent 2/19) by 4 wickets.
