This Day That Year: Zimbabwe stun Pakistan in Test match
The Zimbabwean Cricket Team registered a stunning win over
Pakistan in the second Test match played at Harare Sports Club, Harare on 14th
September 2013.
Setting a target of 264 runs to win, Zimbabwe reduced
Pakistan to 158 for 5 at the end of day 4. It was an ideal start for the hosts
as Tendai Chatara got rid of Adnan Akmal to leave Pakistan on the brink. Misbah
UL Haq and Abdur Rahman played with intent putting pressure on Zimbabwe
bowlers.
Panyangara made an important breakthrough for Zimbabwe
dismissing Rahman. Misbah UL Haq took the responsibility of positive stroke
play and kept Pakistan's hopes alive. Saeed Ajmal faced lots of deliveries as
Misbah hitting lovely strokes. Chatara got the important breakthrough getting
the wicket of Saeed Ajmal.
Misbah UL Haq remained calm and reached his fifty off 142
balls. Pakistan went into the lunch break at 217 for 8. After the break, Misbah
hit some lovely strokes to put pressure on the Zimbabwe bowlers. Junaid Khan's
resistance came to an end as Chatara struck. A superb run-out ended the innings
for Pakistan as Rahat Ali was the final batsmen to be dismissed. Zimbabwe
bowled out Pakistan for 239 giving the hosts a remarkable 24 runs win.
It was an amazing Test match that shifted from one end to
another. Zimbabwe captain Brendon Taylor won the toss and decided to bat first.
Superb knocks by Hamilton Masakadza ( 75), Brendon Taylor 51 helped Zimbabwe
score 237 for 8. Valuable contributions from Utseya, Chatara, and Panyangara post
a competitive total of 294 runs.
The Pakistani batsmen did a good job on the 2nd
day as ended on 163 for 3. Brian Vitori superb spell on the 3rd day
led Zimbabwe to bowl out Pakistan for 230 giving the hosts a 64 runs lead. Tino
Mawoyo knock helped the hosts end at 121 for 4. The Pakistani bowlers made a
strong comeback and dismissed Zimbabwe for 199.
Zimbabwe bowlers wreaked havoc to nip five wickets at the
end of day 4. It was an amazing performance by the hosts who showed their class
against a strong Pakistani side. It was their first-ever Test win over any Test-playing nation apart from Bangladesh since 2001.
For his all-round efforts, Tendai Chatra was named the man
of the match award. Zimbabwe drew the 2 match Test series at 1-1.
Zimbabwe 294 in 109.5 overs ( Masakadza 75, Brendon Taylor
51, Junaid Khan 4/67) and 199 in 89.5 overs ( Mawoyo 58, Masakadza 44, Rahat
Ali 5/52) beat Pakistan 230 in 104.5 overs ( Younis Khan 77, Khurram Manzoor 51,
Brian Vitori 5/61) and 239 in 81 overs ( Misbah UL Haq 79*, Chatara 5/61) by 24
runs.
