Denmark Open 2020: Kidambi Srikanth goes down fighting in the quarterfinals

 

The Indian challenge ended as Kidambi Srikanth goes down fighting in the quarterfinals of the Super 750 Denmark Open played at Odense on Friday.

It was a good start to the first game for K Srikanth who played with aggression and put World number 2 on backfoot. Chou Tien Chen fought back strongly to level the scores at 10-10. At the interval, Srikanth had a slender 11-10 lead. After the interval, it was a neck to neck to battle between these two players as the Indian showed his class to level the scores at 17-17. The All England silver medallists of 2020, Chou had a match point but Srikanth saved the match point. The Indian showed his class and won the first set at 22-20.

In the second game, Chou played some brilliant badminton at the start. Srikanth kept up with pace against the top quality Chinese Taipei player. The Indian played some brilliant smashes and delightful lifts. Chou had a decent lead at the mid-game interval. After the interval, Chou showed his class to win the second set at 21-13 to force the match into the decider.

The third and final game saw Chou playing with aggression putting the Indian under pressure. Srikanth looked out of sorts but showed his fighting spirit. Despite his great attacking play, Srikanth could not keep up with the pace and lost the third set at 16-21 to be knocked out of the tournament.

He was the only Indian to reach the last 8 stages. Lakshya Sen made it into round 2 while Ajay Jayaram and Shubankar Dey were knocked out in the first round itself.

Srikanth gave a tough fight to World number 2 and almost looked to defeat him. His performance against the top-seeded player will give him confidence in performing well in the upcoming tournaments.
