Denmark Open 2020: Kidambi Srikanth moves into quarter finals, Lakshya Sen crash out
It was a mixed day for Indian shuttlers as Kidambi Srikanth
moved into the quarterfinals of the Super 750 Denmark Open played at Odense on
Thursday.
Kidambi Srikanth progressed into the quarterfinals with a
convincing win over Anthony Ho-shue of Canada in two straight sets. It was a
dominating performance by the Indian who showed his class and never allowed his
opponent to comeback into the game.
The first game saw Srikanth play with aggression and put the
Canadian player under pressure with his smashes. At the interval, the Indian
led 11-8. After the break, the Indian continued his domination and looked in
complete control winning the set at 21-15.
In the second game, Anthony had a much better start with
good smashes and drop shots as Srikanth committed few mistakes. The Canadian
took an 8-5 lead before the Indian showed his class to win six successive points
to take an 11-8 lead at the interval. After the break, Srikanth made light work
of his opposition and won the second set easily with 21-14. The Indian took six
successive points in the match as compared to three by Anthony. He will face
Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei tomorrow.
Lakshaya Sen went down fighting to Hans Krisitan Solberg
Vittinghus of Denmark in three grueling sets 21-15, 7-21, 18-21 to be knocked
out of the tournament. Sen did not begin well committing a lot of errors. He came
back strongly with great smashes and drop shots to put the Danish player under
pressure. Sen showed his class to win the first set easily at 21-15.
Vittinghus proved to be strong for the young Indian and
looked in complete control right from word go. The Danish player won the second
set easily at 21-7 to force the match into the decider.
The third and final game a see-saw battle with the Danish player
leading with a comfortable margin. At the interval, the Hans led 11-9. After
the interval, it was an entertaining battle as both players fought for each
point. Despite Sen efforts, Viitinghus held his nerves to win the deciding game
at 21-18 to move into the quarterfinals.
