IPL Match 27: Mumbai Indians register a close win over Delhi Capitals
Mumbai Indians registered a close win over Delhi Capitals in
the 27th match of IPL 2020 played at Sheikh Zayed International
Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Sunday.
Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and decided
to bat first. It was not an ideal start as Prithvi Shaw was dismissed by Trent
Boult in the first over itself. Ajiyanka Rahane playing his first match of the
tournament hit some lovely strokes putting pressure on MI bowlers. Krunal
Pandya struck immediately to dismiss Rahane leaving Capitals in trouble at 24
for 2. Shikhar Dhawan and Iyer steadied the ship for Mumbai Indians with positive
strokes. At the end of the first six overs, DC scored 46 for 2.
Dhawan and Iyer looked confident with their stroke play. At
the end of the first timeout, DC scored 61 for 2. After the timeout, both
batsmen made the batting look easy and kept on ticking the scoreboard. Krunal
Pandya did the job for MI dismissing the dangerous Iyer giving a simple to
Trent Boult at deep midwicket. Iyer and Dhawan added 85 runs for the 3rd
wicket. With that wicket, the second timeout was called.
Marcus Stoinis was run-out trying to steal the second
run-out as Yadav produced a good throw as Chahar broke the stumps leaving Delhi
Capitals in some trouble. Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah bowled brilliantly in
the death overs. Dhawan looked composed to reach his first fifty off 39 balls. Delhi
Capitals posted 162 for 4 in 20 overs.
Chasing 163 runs to win, Quinton de Kock looked in cracking
touch putting pressure on the Delhi Capitals bowlers. On the other hand, Rohit
Sharma struggled to time the ball. Axar Patel provided the breakthrough getting
rid of Rohit giving a simple catch to Rabada at deep midwicket. De Kock timed
the ball and put DC bowlers under pressure. At the end of the first six overs,
Mumbai Indians made 44 for 1.
After the field restrictions, de Kock showed his class and
completed his fifty off 33 balls. At the end of the first timeout, Mumbai
Indians looked in a comfortable position at 72 for 1. Ravichandran Ashwin made an
important breakthrough dismissing de Kock. De Kock and Surya Kumar Yadav put on
46 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Surya Kumar Yadav continued to impress with his strokes and
looked in complete control. Ishan Kishan survived a run-out call but then
showed class with big strokes. Surya Kumar reached his fifty off 30 balls. Trying
to hit another big shot, he perished giving an easy catch to Iyer at mid-off.
Yadav and Kishan added 53 runs for the 3rd wicket.
In the next over, Marcus Stoinis struck to dismiss Hardik
Pandya leaving the match interesting. Rabada struck again getting rid of Ishan
Kishan. Anrich Nortje bowled a stunning 19th over giving away just 3
runs.
With 7 runs required off the final over, Krunal Pandya hit a
boundary to keep the match in favor of Mumbai Indians. Kieron Pollard hit the
winning runs helping Mumbai Indians win by 5 wickets.
For his 53 off 36 balls, de Kock was named the man of the match
award. Mumbai Indians move up to the top of the points table.
Mumbai Indians 166 for 5 in 19.4 overs ( Surya Kumar Yadav
53, Quinton de Kock 53, Rabada 2/28, Axar Patel 1/24) beat Delhi Capitals 162
for 4 in 20 overs ( Dhawan 69*, Iyer 42, Krunal Pandya 2/26, Boult 1/36) by five
wickets.
