IPL Match 31: Kings XI Punjab register a last ball win over RCB

 

Kings XI Punjab registered a last-ball win over Royal Challengers Bangalore played at Sharjah Cricket Ground, Sharjah on Thursday.

Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first. Devdutt Paddikal and Aaron Finch provided a decent start with positive stroke play putting pressure on Kings XI Punjab bowlers. RCB openers played some lovely strokes making life tough for the opposition. Arshdeep Singh got the breakthrough by dismissing Paddikal with a simple catch to Pooran. RCB openers put on 38 runs in 4.1 overs.

Virat Kohli came to the crease and took a few balls to settle. At the end of the first six overs, Royal Challengers Bangalore made 57 for 1. Aaron Finch was dropped by KL Rahul but Murgun Ashwin produced a beauty to dismiss Finch. RCB decided to send Washington Sundar but could not time the ball. On the other hand, Kohli rotated the strike taking singles and doubles. At the end of the first timeout, RCB made 75 for 2.

After the timeout, Murgun Ashwin struck for Kings XI Punjab dismissing Washington Sundar. It was not a great move as RCB decided to send Shivam Dube ahead of AB de Villiers. Dube struggled to time the ball and looked out of sorts. At the end of the second timeout, RCB made 103 for 3.

Shivam Dube hit 2 big sixes off Ravi Bishnoi’s bowling and put the Kings XI Punjab bowlers under pressure. Jordan provided the breakthrough dismissing Dube leaving RCB in some trouble. Mohammed Shami did a superb job getting big wickets of AB de Villiers and well-set Virat Kohli.

It was a superb final over as Chris Morris and Udana smacked 24 runs off the final over to help RCB post 171 for 6 in 20 overs.

Chasing 172 runs to win, it was a cautious start by KXIP openers KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul 15 runs off Yuzvendra Chahal’s first over. The in-form Kings XI Punjab openers looked in complete control and made 56 for 0 at the end of the first six overs. With that, the first timeout was taken.

After the timeout, Mayank and Rahul continued to put the RCB bowlers under pressure. Chahal provided the breakthrough getting rid of Mayank for a quickfire 45 off 25 balls. KXIP openers put on 78 runs. Chris Gayle playing his first match struggled initially with his timing. He was given out by the umpire and Gayle decided to review the decision, it was overturned.

Gayle took the attack to Washington Sundar and put RCB bowlers under pressure. Rahul looked in decent touch making life tough for the opposition. Rahul completed his fifty off 37 balls. Gayle created enough pressure on Mohammed Siraj with big strokes to make the equation easy. At the end of the second timeout, Kings XI Punjab made 146 for 1.

Gayle completed his half-century off 36 balls. Isuru Udana gave away 5 runs off the 19th over. With 2 runs required off the final over, Gayle just scored 1 run from 3 balls. A superb throw by Paddikal ended the innings for Gayle. Gayle and Rahul put on 93 runs for the 2nd wicket. Nicolas Pooran hit a six to help Kings XI Punjab register their 2nd win of IPL 2020.

Kings XI Punjab had defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first encounter. KL Rahul for his 61*, was named the man of the match award.

Kings XI Punjab 177 for 2 in 20 overs (Rahul 61*, Gayle 53, Chahal 1/35) beat RCB 171 for 6 in 20 overs ( Kohli 48, Chris Morris 25*, M Ashwin 2/23, Shami 2/45) by 8 wickets.
