This Day That Year: New World T20 champions emerged
For the first time in their history, the West Indies Cricket
Team emerged World T20 Champions as they defeated the hosts Sri Lanka played at
R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on 7th October 2012.

bat first. It was not an ideal start for the visitors as they lost 2 early
wickets of Johnson Charles and dangerous Chris Gayle cheaply. At the end of six
overs, West Indies looked in deep trouble at 14 for 2.
After the field restrictions, Samuels and Dwayne Bravo
steadied the innings with positive stroke play. Ajantha Mendis struck for Sri
Lanka dismissing Bravo ending a 59 runs partnership for the 3rd
wicket. The hosts kept a tight line and lengths reducing West Indies to 87 for
5. Samuels played with positive intent reaching his half-century off 46 balls.
After completing his fifty, he just took off and smashed the Sri Lankan
bowlers. He was finally dismissed for a brilliant 78 off 56 balls.
West Indies captain Darren Sammy played a quickfire cameo remaining
not out on 26 off 15 balls helping the visitors post 137 for 6 in 20 overs. The
pitch was tough to bat having spin and bounce for the bowlers.
Chasing 138 runs to win, T Dilshan was dismissed for 0. The experienced
duo of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayewardene steadied the innings hitting
gaps and rotating the strike. At the end of six overs, Sri Lanka scored 30 for
1.
After the field restrictions, the West Indies bowlers did
not allow the Lankan batsmen to score runs easily and picked wickets at regular
intervals. Samuel Badree struck for West
Indies dismissing the dangerous Sangakkara. Sangakkara and Jayewardene put on
42 runs for the 2nd wicket. Sunil Narine wreaked havoc among the Sri
Lankan batsmen.
Apart from Sangakkara and Jayewardene, Nuwan Kulaskera made
26 off 13 balls but was not enough. West Indies bowled out Sri Lanka for 101 in
18.4 overs to win their maiden World T20 title.
For his superb knock of 78 from 56 balls, Marlon Samuels was
named the man of the match award. West Indies were clubbed with Ireland and
Australia in Group B. They lost to Australia while their match against Ireland
was washed out due to rain. Because of the better run rate, West Indies qualified for
the Super Eight stage.
In the Super Eight Stage, West Indies defeated England and
New Zealand while lost to Sri Lanka. With 4 points, Darren Sammy led side qualified
for the semi-finals. It was a dominating performance by West Indies who

1979 edition of the World Cup.
