This Day That Year: Virat Kohli achieved another big feat
During the 2nd Test match against South Africa
played at MCA Stadium, Pune on 11th October 2019, Virat Kohli
achieved another major milestone in international cricket.
Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat
first. The hero of the last match Rohit Sharma was dismissed
cheaply by Kagiso Rabada. Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara steadied the
innings putting pressure on the South African bowling line-up. Both batsmen
looked composed with his stroke play against good quality pacers. India went
into the lunch break at 77 for 1.
After the lunch break, Agarwal and Pujara looked steady with
their intent. Mayank completed his fifty off 112 balls. Pujara also completed
his half-century off 107 balls. Rabada got the breakthrough for South Africa
dismissing the dangerous Pujara for 58. Pujara and Mayank put on 138 runs for
the 2nd wicket. After his failures in the first test, Kohli looked
determined. Rabada got his 3rd wicket dismissing the well-set Mayank
Agarwal.
Kohli looked in complete control and put the South African
bowlers under pressure. The Indian captain reached his fifty off 91 balls. At
the end of day 1, India scored 273 for 3.
With the second new ball, South Africa bowlers tried to make
the breakthroughs but could not do it. Kohli and Rahane showed respect on the 2nd the morning before dominating their attack. Rahane completed his fifty off 141
balls while Kohli reached his century off 173 balls. India went into lunch
break in a commanding position at 356 for 3.
After the lunch break, Keshav Maharaj finally got the
breakthrough dismissing Rahane. Kohli and Rahane added 178 runs for the 4th
wicket. Kohli continued his merry way reaching his 150 off 241 balls. It was a
dominating performance by the Indian captain who scored the runs with ease. India
scored 473 for 4 at the tea break.
Kohli became the first Indian to score seven double
centuries as he reached 200 off 295 balls. Kohli and Jadeja upped the ante with
big strokes. After reaching the milestone, Kohli was caught off a no-ball. He
completed his 250 off 334 balls. The Indian team declared their innings on
massive 601 for 5. Kohli remained not out on his career-best Test score of 254
not out of 336 balls.
Kohli made his double century against West Indies at North
Sound, Antigua on 21st July 2016. Since then, he showed his class
and stamped his authority on the bowlers. He has been the backbone of the Indian
Cricket Team for quite some on overseas conditions that help the bowlers.
