IPL Match 53: Kings XI Punjab knocked out of IPL 2020
It was a disappointing end to Kings XI Punjab journey as
they were knocked out by losing to Chennai Super Kings badly in the 53rd
match of IPL 2020 played at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium, Abu Dhabi on
Sunday.
CSK captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to field
first. Kings XI Punjab openers KL Rahul and comeback man Mayank Agarwal got the
team off to a flying start putting pressure on CSK bowlers with aggressive
strokes. Mayank looked in decent touch hitting the ball in gaps and creating
pressure.
Lungi Ngidi got the breakthrough immediately getting rid of
Mayank Agarwal getting inside edge onto the stumps. Kings XI Punjab openers put
on 48 runs and ended the first six overs at 53 for 1.
Kings XI Punjab ended the first timeout at 56 for 1. CSK
bowlers made a strong comeback to put pressure on Kings XI Punjab batsmen.
Ngidi struck again to dismiss KXIP captain KL Rahul with a good yorker. Shardul
Thakur made another important breakthrough getting the wicket of Nicolas Pooran
hitting the edge to MS Dhoni.
Kings XI Punjab innings fell downslide as the dangerous
Chris Gayle was dismissed by Imran Tahir with a review. The umpire gave it out
and the decision remained like it. At the end of the second timeout, Kings XI Punjab
scored 77 for 4. Deepak Hooda looked busy taking singles to put pressure on CSK
bowlers along with Mandeep Singh.
Ravindra Jadeja broke the partnership dismissing Mandeep
Singh to leave Kings XI Punjab in trouble. Mandeep and Hooda added 36 runs for
the 5th wicket. A superb catch by Gaikwad ended the innings for
James Neesham to leave Kings XI Punjab in big trouble. Deepak Hooda played with
intent and completed his fifty off just 26 balls and took most of the strike.
At the end of the 20 overs, Kings XI Punjab posted 153 for 6 in 20 overs.
Chasing 154 runs to win, it was a steady start by Faf du
Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad who played with intent putting pressure on Kings XI
Punjab bowlers. Both batsmen looked composed making the batting at ease. At the
end of the first six overs, CSK scored 57 for 0.
After field restrictions, Faf du Plessis was given out by
the umpire but it was overturned as it hit the thigh pad. At the end of the
first timeout, CSK looked at ease with the scoreboard reading 62 for 0. Chris
Jordan eventually broke through getting rid of Faf du Plessis. CSK openers put
on 82 runs to lay a strong foundation. Gaikwad played with intent and showed
his class making life tough for KXIP hitting his third fifty in a row off 38
balls. Rayudu also contributed making 30 off 30 balls. Gaikwad and Rayudu added
unbeaten 72 runs for the 2nd wicket. CSK won the match easily by 9
wickets with 7 balls to spare.
For his 62* off 49 balls, Ruturaj Gaikwad was named the man
of the match award. Kings XI Punjab has been knocked out of the tournament.
CSK 154 for 1 in 18.5 overs ( Gaikwad 62*, du Plessis 48, Chris
Jordan 1/31) beat Kings XI Punjab 153 for 6 in 20 overs ( Deepak Hooda 62*,
Ngidi 3/39, Tahir 1/24) by 9 wickets.
