IPL Match 54: Kolkata Knight Riders crush RR to stay alive in the tournament
Kolkata Knight Riders produced a dominating performance as
they defeated Rajasthan Royals by a big margin played at Dubai International
Stadium, Dubai on Sunday.
Rajasthan Royals captain Steve Smith won the toss and
decided to field first. It was an ideal start for RR as Jofra Archer got rid of
Nitish Rana with a review. The umpire gave it out and Rana decided to review
it, as there was an edge. Shubman Gill and Rahul Tripathi took the attack
playing positive strokes to put RR bowlers under immense pressure. At the end
of the first six overs, KKR scored 55 for 1.
Rahul Tewaita provided the much-needed breakthrough for RR
getting rid of Shubman Gill with a simple catch to Buttler. Gill and Tripathi
added 72 runs for the 2nd wicket. With that wicket, the first
timeout was called at 73 for 2. Tewaita struck again after timeout dismissing
Sunil Narine. Things got worst for KKR as they lost wickets of Rahul Tripathi
and Dinesh Karthik. KKR captain Eoin Morgan came to the crease and blasted away
the RR bowlers along with Andre Russell.
At the end of the second timeout, KKR scored 100 for 5. It was amazing hitting by the experienced duo.
Karthik Tyagi dismissed dangerous Russell for a quickfire 25 off 11 balls. Russell
and Morgan added 45 runs for the 6th wicket. Eoin Morgan took the
charge and smashed Ben Stokes for 24 runs in the 19th over. He also
reached his fifty off just 30 balls. Pat Cummins also contributed valuable
runs. Morgan and Cummins added quickfire 40 runs. Morgan hit a six off the
final ball to help KKR post 191 for 6 in 20 overs.
Chasing 192 runs to win, Robin Uthappa and Ben Stokes got
off a cracking start scoring 19 runs off the first five balls before Cummins
dismissed Uthappa. A superb one-handed catch by Dinesh Karthik ended the
innings for Ben Stokes. Cummins was at his best getting rid of Steve Smith with
an inside edge onto stumps to leave RR in massive trouble. Sanju Samson and
Riyan Parag also fell cheaply. At the end of the first six overs, RR made 41
for 5.
Jos Buttler and Rahul Tewaita played some cracking strokes
to put some pressure on KKR bowlers. At the end of the first timeout, RR scored
66 for 5. It was decent going by Buttler and Tewaita. Varun Chakravarthy struck
immediately off the first ball getting rid of Buttler. Buttler and Tewaita
added 43 runs for the 6th wicket. Tewaita impressed with his stroke
play. Chakravarthy dismissed Tewaita to end RR hopes. At the end of the second
timeout, RR scored 105 for 7. KKR won the match easily by 60 runs to move into
fourth place.
For his superb figures of 4 for 34 in 4 overs, Pat Cummins
was awarded the man of the match award.
KKR 191 for 7 in 20 overs (Eoin Morgan 68*, Tripathi 39, Tewaita 3/25, Tyagi 2/36) beat RR 131 for 9 in 20 overs (Buttler 35, Tewaita 31, Cummins 4/34, Mavi 2/15) by 60 runs.
