Lanka Premier League Finals: Jaffna Stallions beat Gladiators to become LPL champions

 

Jaffna Stallions produced an all-round display defeating Galle Gladiators easily to become the Champions of the inaugural edition of Lanka Premier League played at MRIECS Stadium, Hambantota on Wednesday.

Jaffna Stallions captain Thisara Perera won the toss and decided to bat first. The decision paid off as Charles and Avishka Fernando provided a flying start putting pressure on the opposition bowlers. Charles was in sublime form hitting boundaries at will making life tough for Gladiators. Lakshan got the breakthrough dismissing the dangerous Charles. Stallions openers put on 44 runs in just 28 balls. At the end of the first six overs, Stallions made 51 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Gladiators bowlers made a strong comeback in the match taking wickets of Asalanka and Fernando to put Stallions under some pressure. The experienced duo of Shoaib Malik and youngster Dhanajaya de Silva steadied the innings putting pressure back on Gladiators bowlers. Lakshan struck to get rid of Dhananjaya de Silva as both added 69 runs for the 4th wicket.

Stallions captain Thisara Perera looked in fine touch and put the Gladiators bowlers under immense pressure. Malik was dismissed for a superb 46 off 35 balls. Perera played a brilliant cameo remaining not out on 39 off 14 balls to help Stallions post 188 for 6 in 20 overs. Dhanajaya Lakshan was the pick of the bowlers for Gladiators taking 3 for 36 while Mohammad Aamir, Sandakan, and Ararchighe took 1 wicket each.

Chasing 189 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for Gladiators as Dhananjaya de Silva got the wicket of Zazai in the very first over itself. The inform Danushka Gunathilaka was run out while colliding with Suranga Lakmal. Lakmal got rid of Ahsan Ali to leave Gladiators in tatters at 7 for 3. Bhanuka Rajapaksa came to the crease and played with intent putting pressure on Stallions bowlers. At the end of the first six overs, Gladiators made 30 for 3.

After the field restrictions, Rajapaksa showed his class and gave some hopes but was eventually dismissed for a quickfire 40 off 17 balls. Rajapaksa and Shehan Jayasuriya added 55 runs for the 4th wicket. Usman Shenwari produced a beauty to dismiss Jayasuriya to dent Gladiators' hopes of winning.

Azam Khan played with some serious intent putting the Stallions bowlers under some pressure. After smashing 2 successive sixes off Oliver’s bowling, Khan was dismissed ending the hopes of Gladiators winning the match.

The task was too steep for Gladiators as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Shoaib Malik bowled the final over. Stallions won the match by 53 runs to win the title easily.

Jaffna Stallions 188 for 6 in 20 overs (Shoaib Malik 46, Thisara Perera 39*, Dhanjaya Lakshan 3/36) beat Galle Gladiators 135 for 9 in 20 overs ( Bhanuka Rajapaksa 40, Azam Khan 36, Shenwari 2/20, Malik 2/13) by 53 runs.

For his all-round efforts, Shoaib Malik was named the man of the match award while Hasaranga was named the man of the series award.
