BBL 2024-25 Qualifier 1: Hobart Hurricanes Stun Sydney Sixers To Qualify For Finals
Hobart
Hurricanes produced a superb effort to stun Sydney Sixers in the first qualifier
played at Ninja Cricket Stadium, Belivere Stadium, Hobart on 21st
January 2025.
Sydney Sixers
captain Moises Henriques won the bat flip and decided to field first. Mitchell
Owen showed right from the word go putting pressure on Sydney Sixers opening
bowlers. At the end of the first 4 overs, Hobart Hurricanes raced away to 47
for 0.
Right after
the field restrictions, Jafer Chohan got the breakthrough dismissing dangerous Mitchell
Owen caught by Shaw at deep midwicket. Owen and Caleb Jewell added 47 runs for
the opening wicket.
A stunning
one-handed catch by Jack Edwards at backward point resulted in the wicket of
Matthew Wade. Ben McDermott and Caleb Jewell struggled against disciplined Sydney
Sixers bowling.
Dwarshuis
produced a superb yorker delivery to dismiss Jewell. Jewell and McDermott put
on 52 runs for the 3rd wicket. Hobart Hurricanes took the power
surge overs from the 14th to the 16th. Tim David and
Dermott showed intent to put Sydney Sixers bowlers under immense pressure
scoring 33 runs.
Chohan
struck to dismiss the well-set McDermott caught by Perry at the boundary. Tim
David hit some lusty blows to help Hobart Hurricanes post a decent total. Dwarshuis
and Jack Edwards ensured that Sydney Sixers did not allow Hurricanes to smash huge
a score.
Chasing 174
runs to win, Sydney Sixers got off to the worst possible start as they lost the
wickets of Joshua Phillipe, Jack Edwards &captain Moises Henriques to leave
them in trouble at 5 for 3.
At the end
of the first four overs, Sydney Sixers looked in trouble at 17 for 3. Kurtis
Patterson and Jordan Silk steadied the ship for Sydney Sixers with boundaries
and keeping the strike rotating.
Gannon got
the big wicket of Kurtis Patterson to end a valuable 75- runs partnership for
the 4th wicket. With the run rate required climbing, Lalchan Shaw
and Jordan Silk took the power surge overs from 14th to 16th.
Both Sydney Sixers batters kept calm hitting some lovely shots.
Jordan Silk
looked composed reaching fifty off 39 deliveries. Hobart Hurricanes captain
Nathan Ellis struck to dismiss Silk caught by Chris Jordan. Silk and Shaw added
64 runs for the 5th wicket.
With 20
runs to defend, Chris Jordan bowled lovely deliveries to Dwarshuis and Shaw not
allowing them to hit big shots. Hobart Hurricanes qualified for the BBL 14 finals
directly and will play the finals at Hobart. Sydney
Sixers will play the winner of Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars.
For his
figures of 2 for 34, Riley Meredith was named the Player of the Match award.
Meredith took the wickets of Joshua Phillipe and captain Moises Henriques to
derail Sydney sixers innings.
Hobart
Hurricanes 173 for 7 in 20 overs (Ben McDermott 42, Jafer Chohan 2/28) beat
Sydney Sixers 161 for 5 in 20 overs (Jordan Silk 57, Kutis Patterson 48,
Cameron Gannon Riley Meredith 2/34, 2/10) by 12 runs.
