New Zealand versus Pakistan 1st Test 2nd Day: New Zealand in a commanding position
Thanks to a superb batting display, New Zealand ended the second day of the 1st Test match in a commanding position played at
Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on Sunday.
New Zealand began the 2nd Day at 222 for 3, Henry
Nicholls reached his half-century off 108 balls while Kiwis captain Kane
Williamson completed his century off 261 balls to put enough pressure on the
Pakistani bowling. Naseem Shah broke the much-needed partnership getting rid of
Henry Nicholls. Nicholls and Williamson added 133 runs for the 4th
wicket. The catch went to Haris Sohail at slips, but the umpires decided to
review the decision as it was given not out on soft signal. The decision was
overturned as Williamson was dismissed for a brilliant 129.
After that BJ Watling and Mitchell Santer remained solid
enough to help New Zealand end the lunch session at 301 for 5. The second session
saw good bowling by the Pakistani bowlers as Faheem Ashraf struck to get rid of
Santer.
Kyle Jamieson came to the crease and looked positive right
from word go making life tough for the opposition bowlers. BJ Watling showed
his class by putting pressure on Pakistani batting to reach his fifty off 111
balls. Mohammad Abbas bowled a beauty to dismiss Kyle Jamieson. Jamieson and
Watling added 66 runs for the 7th wicket. New Zealand ended the
second session at 383 for 7. Naseem Shah hobbled due to an injury but came back
after some time.
It was a good start for Pakistan in the third session as
Yasir Shah bowled a beauty to dismiss Tim Southee. The pitch had variable
bounce troubling the batsmen. BJ Watling remained steady enough along with Neil
Wagner. Watling innings ended trying to score quick runs. Yasir Shah got rid of
Wagner to bowl out the hosts for 431.
Shan Masood and Abid Ali kept top quality bowling of Southee
and Boult with the new ball. Kyle Jamieson got the breakthrough by dismissing
Masood played a loose stroke. Mohammad Abbas came as nightwatchmen making
sure that Pakistan end the 2nd day at 30 for 1.
Pakistan 30 for 1 in 20 overs ( Abid
Ali 19*, Jameison 1/5) trail New Zealand 431 in 155 overs ( Williamson 129, Watling
76, Taylor 70, Shaheen Shah Afridi 4/109, Shah 3/113) by 401 runs.
