This Day That Year: India put West Indies under the hammer
With the series level at 1-1, the Indian Cricket Team
showed great batting skills in the final T20I match played at the Wankhede Stadium,
Mumbai on 11th December 2019.
West Indies captain Kieron Pollard won the toss and decided
to bowl first. It was a cautious start by Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul initially. It
was an amazing hitting by both Indian openers who kept putting pressure on the
West Indies bowlers especially Rohit Sharma who looked out of form in the first
two matches. At the end of the first six overs, India raced away 72 for 0.
Rohit Sharma was simply sensational and reached his fifty
off just 23 balls to keep India’s momentum. On the other hand, KL Rahul also
completed a half-century off 29 balls. The Indian openers kept on hitting runs at
will and made sure that India was on course for a big total. Kesrick Williams
provided the breakthrough for West Indies dismissing Rohit Sharma scoring a
quickfire 71 off 34 balls. The Indian openers added 135 runs in just 11.4
overs. Rishabh Pant was dismissed without scoring any runs.
The Indian captain Virat Kohli came to the crease and looked
in sublime touch right from word go. He took on Kesrick Williams after being
dismissed in the 2nd T20I. Kohli showed tremendous hitting power to
reach his half-century off 21 balls making life tough for the opposition. He
smashed 27 runs off Kieron Pollard in the 19th over.
KL Rahul’s innings came to end as Sheldon Cottrell dismissed
him. Rahul and Kohli added 95 runs for the 3rd wicket. Kohli hit a
six off the final ball to help India post a massive total of 245 for 3. Kohli
scored a breathtaking 70 from 29 balls with 4 fours and 7 sixes.
In reply, the West Indies could not recover from early
losses and were reduced to 17 for 3. Shimron Hetymer and Kieron Pollard put
some fight adding 74 runs for the 4th wicket. Kieron Pollard hit
some lusty blows, but it was not enough for West Indies. India restricted West
Indies to 173 for 8 in 20 overs to win the match by 67 runs.
India posted their 3rd highest total in T20Is
during this match. After losing the 2nd T20I, the Indian Team showed
great hitting power and put the West Indies bowlers under pressure right from the word go.
India 240 for 3 in 20 overs ( KL Rahul 91, Kohli 70*, Rohit
Sharma 71, Kesrick Williams 1/37) beat West Indies 173 for 8 in 20 overs (
Kieron Pollard 68, Shimron Hetymer 41, Mohammed Shami 2/25, Deepak Chahar 2/20)
by 67 runs.
For his breathtaking knock of 70 from 29 balls, Indian
captain Virat Kohli was named the man of the match award.
