This Day That Year: Indian opener created record in ODIs
The explosive opener, Virender Sehwag was at his prime best
as he created a major record in the 4th ODI match against West
Indies at Holkar Stadium, Indore on 8th December 2011.
Indian stand-in captain Virender Sehwag won the toss and
decided to bat first on a placid pitch. The opening pair of Sehwag and Gambhir
provided a flying start putting pressure with attacking stroke play making life
tough for the visitors. At the end of the first 10 overs, India looked in
complete control at 63 for 0.
After the field restrictions, Sehwag made the batting look
easy and completed his fifty off 41 balls. His opening partner Gambhir also
reached a half-century off 51 balls. It was a disappointing end for Gambhir as he
was run out. The Indian openers put on 176 runs in just 22.5 overs laying a
strong foundation for a massive total. Sehwag looked in sublime touch and put
the West Indies bowlers under immense pressure.
Sehwag completed his century off 69 balls and kept on piling
runs easily. On the other hand, Suresh Raina joined the party with a
quickfire knock hitting boundaries at will. Sehwag played an array of strokes and
made sure that India was on course for a massive total. The opener reached his
150 off 112 balls. Raina and Sehwag added 140 runs for the 2nd
wicket as Raina was dismissed for a quickfire 55.
Sehwag played the spinners and pacers equally. He became the
2nd batsman in ODI cricket to hit a double century off 140 balls. It
was a sensational innings by an explosive opener who was eventually dismissed for
219 from 149 balls with 25 fours and 7 sixes at a strike rate of 146.97. Thanks
to cameos by Rohit Sharma, Kohli, India posted their highest total in ODI
cricket of 418 for 5.
It was a steep ask for the visitors as they were bowled out
for 265 in 49.2 overs. The Indian Cricket Team won the match by a massive 153
runs margin. For his record-breaking knock, Sehwag was named the man of the
match award.
Sehwag created a major impact along with Gambhir who showed
their class while opening the batting in ODI format.
India 418 for 5 in 50 overs (Sehwag 219, Gambhir 67, Andre
Russell 1/63) beat West Indies 265 in 49.2 overs ( Denesh Ramdin 96, Simmons
