This Day That Year: Rohit Sharma created a massive record in ODI cricket
It was a historic day for international cricket as Rohit
Sharma created a massive record during the 2nd ODI against Sri Lanka
played at PCA Stadium, Mohali on 13th December 2017.
Sri Lankan captain Thisara Perera won the toss and decided
to field first. Rohit Sharma started off cautiously along with Shikhar Dhawan scoring
33 runs off the first 10 overs. The pitch had some seam movement, but the Indian
openers remained steady with their stroke play.
Shikhar Dhawan took on the Sri Lankan bowlers and put them
under pressure. On the other hand, Rohit remained steady giving strike to
Dhawan. The left-handed southpaw completed his fifty off 47 balls while Rohit
completed his fifty off 65 balls. India lost their first wicket at the score of
115 as Dhawan was dismissed for well made 68.
Shreyas Iyer looked positive right from word go and put the Sri
Lankan bowlers under pressure. After completing his half-century, Rohit Sharma made
the batting look easy and kept on hitting the Sri Lankan bowlers with ease to
complete his century off 115 balls. Rohit Sharma upped the ante with an array of
strokes and hit 4 sixes in an over off Lakmal to put the Sri Lankan bowlers under immense pressure. He reached his
150 off 133 balls and made sure that India was on course for a big total.
Rohit Sharma plundered the Sri Lankan bowlers all over the
park and became the first batsman in ODI cricket to score 3 double centuries.
He achieved this remarkable feat off 151 balls and remained not out on 208 off
153 balls with 13 fours and 12 sixes to help India post a massive total of 392
for 4 in 50 overs.
It was an amazing innings as Rohit reached his milestone on
his anniversary. The task was too tall for Sri Lanka as India won the match by
a massive 141 runs.
For his record-breaking 208 runs not out, Rohit Sharma was
named the man of the match award. It was an amazing performance after he failed
to score any runs in the 1st ODI at Dharamshala.
India 392 for 4 in 50 overs (Rohit Sharma 208*, Shreyas Iyer
88, Thisara Perera 3/80) beat Sri Lanka
251 for 8 in 50 overs ( Angelo Mathews 111*, Chahal 3/60) by 141 runs.
