This Day That Year: Second highest run aggregate in ODIs

 

It was an amazing game of cricket as two strong Asian nations were involved in a high scoring played at Madhav Rao Scindia Stadium, Rajkot on 15th December 2009.

Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and decided to field first. Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag provided flying starts putting the Sri Lankan bowlers under immense pressure right from word go making life tough for the opposition. Sehwag looked in great touch and reached his half-century off just 34 balls while the master blaster Sachin completed the milestone off 48 balls to lay a strong foundation for a massive total.

It was a great batting wicket as the Indian openers took advantage. Dilhara Fernando finally broke through dismissing Sachin Tendulkar. Both added 153 runs for the opening wicket in 19.3 overs. MS Dhoni promoted himself at number 3 and kept on piling runs while Sehwag showed his class with attacking stroke play. Sehwag reached his century off just 66 balls and made the batting look easy. India completed their 250 in 29.1 overs looking for a massive total.

Dhoni completed his fifty off 34 balls and looked in great touch. Sehwag’s superb innings came to end as Welegadra dismissed him. Sehwag and Dhoni added 156 runs for the 2nd wicket. The Indian team lost quick wickets as Suresh Raina, Gambhir, and Harbhajan Singh were dismissed cheaply. Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja’s cameo helped India post a massive total of 414 for 7 in 50 overs.

Chasing 415 runs to win, Upul Tharanga and TM Dilshan provided a flying start putting the Indian bowlers under pressure. It was an amazing batting display by Sri Lankan openers laying a strong foundation for the big chase. Dilshan completed his fifty off 38 balls while Tharanga gave good support to him.

Dilshan kept on belting the Indian bowlers and showed his class hitting spinners and pacers with ease. He completed his century off 73 balls while Tharanga reached his half-century off just 51 balls. The part-time spinner Suresh Raina got the breakthrough stumping Tharanga. The Sri Lankan openers added 188 runs in 24 overs.

The stylish left-handed batsman Kumar Sangakkara and looked in great touch hitting the bad balls away for boundaries. TM Dilshan continued his aggressive approach making life tough for Indian bowlers. Sangakkara reached half-century off 24 balls while Dilshan completed his 150 off 118 balls.

With the things looking under control for Sri Lanka, Praveen Kumar dismissed Sangakkara to lead India’s comeback. Sangakkara and Dilshan added 128 runs for the 2nd wicket. The Indian bowlers made strong fightback as Sanath Jayasuriya, inform TM Dilshan and Jayewardene were dismissed in quick succession.

Thilina Kandamby and Mathews put up 56 runs for the 6th wicket. With 15 runs required off 2 overs, Zaheer Khan bowled a superb 49th over giving away 4 runs and took 2 wickets including run-out. Ashish Nehra held his nerves helping Team India register a thrilling win by 3 runs.

A total of 825 runs were scored in the match. It still holds the second-highest run aggregate in ODI cricket.

For his superb knock of 146 from 102 balls, Sehwag was named the man of the match award. India took a 1-0 lead in the series.

India 414 for 7 in 50 overs ( Virender Sehwag 146, Dhoni 72, Welegadra 2/63, Kulaskera 2/65) beat Sri Lanka 411 for 8 in 50 overs ( TM Dilshan 160, Sangakkara 90, Harbhajan Singh 2/58, Praveen Kumar 1/67) by 3 runs.
