This Day That Year: Virat Kohli registered his highest T20I score

The Indian captain Virat Kohli was at his sublime best during the 1st T20I match against a power-packed West Indies side played at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on 6th December 2019.

Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to field first. It was a superb batting effort by the powerful West Indies batting line-up with contributions from Evin Lewis, Shimron Hetymer, Kieron Pollard helping the visitors post a massive total of 207 for 5 in 20 overs. India’s fielding was not up to the mark as they dropped catches and gave few extra runs.

Chasing a massive target of 208 runs to win, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul provided a flying start to the innings putting 30 runs in just 3.2 overs laying a strong foundation. The Indian captain Virat Kohli came to the crease and struggled initially with his timing. On the other hand, KL Rahul took the attack to West Indies bowlers. Rahul completed a half-century off 37 balls while Kohli upped the ante with brilliant hitting reaching 50 off just 35 balls. Pierre struck to get rid of Rahul for a well-made 62. Rahul and Kohli added 100 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Rishabh Pant came to the crease and hit some big hits to put the West Indies bowlers under pressure. Kohli was in cracking form taking on Kesrick Williams making life tough for the opposition. Iyer got out cheaply. The Indian captain led from the front and won the match with a six. Kohli registered his T20I score remaining not out on 94 off 50 balls with 6 fours and 6 sixes. India won the match by six wickets with 8 balls to spare.

It was the highest successful run chase by India in T20I format. For his career-best score of 94* off 50 balls, Kohli was named the man of the match award. He showed tremendous skills and managed to dominate opposition bowlers in big run-chase.
