Australia versus India 3rd Test 1st Day: Australia in a decent position at the end of day 1
Thanks to a superb batting effort by the Australian batsmen,
Australia ended the rain-curtailed first day of the third Test match in a
decent position played at Sydney Cricket Ground, SCG on Thursday.
Australian captain Tim Paine won the toss and decided to bat
first. David Warner returning to the playing XI did not look comfortable while
running between the wickets. On other hand, debutant Puckowsi started off
brightly with solid defensive technique. Mohammed Siraj provided the initial
breakthrough getting the big wicket of Warner with a catch at second slips by
Pujara. Bumrah bowled nagging lines and lengths. With the scoreboard reading 21
for 1, rain arrived and stopped play. The umpires called for an early lunch.
The play did not start for a while after the lunch break as
rain arrived again. Umpires did the inspection again and resumed the play at
9.30 IST. Marnus Labuschagne and Pucovski showed their class with positive
intent. Bumrah looked the most threatening bowler for India troubling both
batsmen. R Ashwin was bought into the attack by Rahane early. Rishabh Pant
dropped Puckowsi twice in two successive overs. Pucovski survived another
chance as there was a huge mix-up but a bad throw saved the debutant. Navdeep
Saini was bought into the attack by Rahane and Pucovski reached his maiden Test
fifty off 97 balls. At the end of the 2nd session, Australia scored
93 for 1.
After the tea break, Pucovski played with intent and showed
his class keeping the Australian team on top. Navdeep Saini got rid of the
other debutant to break 100 runs partnership for the 2nd wicket.
Steve Smith looked in fine touch with positive intent putting pressure on
Indian bowlers. Labuschagne made the batting look easy on a good batting pitch
and reached his fifty off 108 balls. Smith and Labuschagne took the attack to Ashwin
putting the Indian team on the backfoot. Ravindra Jadeja was introduced and
troubled Smith with his deliveries. Smith and Labuschagne added 60 unbeaten runs
so far as Australia ended the first day at 166 for 2.
Australia 166 for 2 in 55 overs (Labuschagne 67*, Pucovski
62, Siraj 1/46, Saini 1/32)
