India vs Australia 4th Test 2nd Day: Match hangs in the balance on rain-curtailed day
It was another good day of cricket as the match hangs in the balance on a rain-curtailed 2nd day played at Gabba, Brisbane on Saturday.
Starting on the overnight score of 274 for 5, Tim Paine and
Cameron Green began from where they left with positive intent putting pressure
on the inexperienced Indian bowling. Both played some lovely strokes making
life tough for the opposition. Paine reached his fifty off 102 balls. Shardul
Thakur provided the breakthrough with fuller length delivery giving a simple
catch to Rohit Sharma. Paine and Green added 98 runs for the 6th
wicket. In the next over, Washington Sundar dismissed Cameron Green.
Shardul Thakur produced a superb yorker to get rid of Pat
Cummins leaving Australia in trouble at 315 for 8. The Indian bowlers did not
execute their plans to Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc who played with intent.
Lyon took on Shardul Thakur with lovely strokes while Starc also contributed
with vital runs. Sundar got rid of Lyon who tried to sweep and was bowled. Lyon
and Starc added 41 runs for the 9th wicket. Josh Hazlewood and
Mitchell Starc looked decent enough before T Natarajan dismissed Hazlewood with beauty to bowl out Australia for 369. With that final wicket, umpires called
it lunch.
Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma began cautiously against Starc
and Hazlewood. Pat Cummins got the breakthrough in his opening over dismissing Shubman
Gill with a good catch by Steve Smith at slips. Cheteshwar Pujara was lucky
enough as the catch did not carry to slips. Rohit Sharma looked in fine touch
putting pressure on the Australian bowlers.
On other hand, Pujara looked solid with his defensive technique
while Rohit Sharma continued his aggressive approach. Rohit Sharma came down
the track and was caught by Mitchell Starc at deep midwicket. Rohit and Pujara
added 49 runs for the 2nd wicket. Cheteshwar Pujara and Rahane
remained solid with their defense before umpires called it tea at 62 for 2.
There was no play possible as heavy rains pelted down. The
umpires checked for inspection but due to a wet outfield, they decided to abandoned
play. India ended the 2nd day at 62 for 2.
India 62 for 2 in 26 overs ( Rohit Sharma 44, Cummins 1/22, Lyon 1/10) trail Australia 369 in 115.2 overs ( Labuschagne 108, Paine 50, Green 47, Natarajan 3/78, Sundar 3/89) by 307 runs
India end day 2 at 62 for 2 on rain-curtailed day
