India vs Australia 4th Test 3rd Day: Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar leads India fightback
Thanks to a brilliant partnership between Shardul Thakur and
Washington Sundar, India made a strong comeback on the 3rd day of
the 4th Test match played at Gabba, Brisbane on Sunday.
Starting on the overnight score of 62 for 2, Ajiyanka Rahane
and Cheteshwar Pujara began off decently. Rahane was lucky enough as the edges
went between the slips and gully twice. Pujara played some lovely shots to put
pressure on Australian bowling. Josh Hazlewood provided the breakthrough for
the hosts getting rid of Pujara with good delivery. Pujara and Rahane put on
45 runs for the 3rd wicket. Mayank Agarwal and Rahane looked confident
with their strokes hitting in the gaps and doing good running between the
wickets.
The Australian captain Tim Paine plan worked as Mitchell
Starc got rid of Rahane taking the edge into Wade's hand. Rahane and Mayank added
39 runs for the 4th wicket. Mayank Agarwal showed his class with
strokes while Pant defended well. India went into the lunch break at 161 for 4.
It was not an ideal start for the Indians in the 2nd
session as Mayank Agarwal was dismissed off the very second ball with a rebound
catch by Steve Smith. Washington Sundar looked confident with his defense and
left the ball on the merit. Rishabh Pant showed intent playing aggressively
making life tough for the Australians. A superb catch by Cameron Green at gull
ended the innings for Pant to leave India in some trouble at 186 for 6. Shardul
Thakur came to the crease and played with intent while Washington Sundar looked
confident with his strokes making life tough for the opposition. Australia took
the 2nd new ball immediately but Thakur and Sundar scored runs with
ease. Pat Cummins, Hazlewood, and Starc could not do any damage. India went into
the tea break at 253 for 6.
After the tea break, Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar
played with intent putting pressure on the Australian bowling line-up. Thakur
took on Nathan Lyon taking him for runs to reach his fifty off 90 balls. Sundar
also looked impressive and completed his maiden Test half-century off 108
balls. Thakur and Sundar made the batting look easy before Pat Cummins produced
a good delivery to get rid of Thakur. Thakur and Sundar put on 123 runs for the
7th wicket. Navdeep Saini stayed in there for a while with
Washington Sundar before Saini gave a simple catch to Smith.
Mohammed Siraj came to the crease and just enjoyed himself.
Washington Sundar was caught by Cameron Green ending a superb innings 62. The
Australian pace bowlers delivered short balls to T Natarajan but Siraj hit some
entertaining shots. Hazlewood got rid of Siraj to bowl out India for 336. India
made a remarkable comeback to reduce the lead to just 33.
David Warner made an aggressive start putting pressure on
the Indian bowlers. T Natarajan did not make the Australian openers play.
Australia ended the 3rd day at 21 for 0.
Australia 369 in 115.2 overs (Labuschagne 108, Paine 50,
Green 47, Natarajan 3/78, Sundar 3/89) and 21 for 0 in 6 overs ( Warner 20*,
