Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021: Mumbai and Vidarbha knocked out
After today’s matches, Mumbai and Vidarbha became the two
teams to be knocked out in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 played on Friday.
Mumbai took on Haryana in a Group E match played at Bandra Kurla
Complex Ground, Mumbai. Mumbai captain Surya Kumar Yadav won the toss and
decided to bat first. The young Yaishvi Jaiswal looked in great touch putting
the Haryana bowlers under immense pressure. Jayant Yadav provided the
breakthrough in getting rid of Jayant Yadav.
Jayant Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal created panic among the
Mumbai batting. Jayant Yadav took wickets of Jaiswal for well made 35. Yadav
then dismissed Siddhesh Lad, Shivam Dube, and Shams Mulani in quick succession
to leave Mumbai in tatters at 56 for 6. Atharva Anokolekar and Sarfaraz Khan
provided some stability with a decent partnership. Both batsmen took the attack
to Haryana bowlers.
Rahul Tewaita made the breakthrough getting rid of Anokolekar
for a quickfire 37 off 25 balls. Anokolekar and Sarfaraz Khan added 48 runs for
the 7th wicket. Arjun Tendulkar made his senior debut but did not
face any deliveries. Haryana bowled out Mumbai for a modest total of 143 in 19.3
overs.
In reply to 144 runs to win, Arun Chaprana and Chaitanya
Bishnoi started off briskly for Haryana. Arjun Tendulkar got his maiden wicket
getting rid of Bishnoi. After a quickfire knock of 19 off 7 balls, Chaprana was
dismissed by Mulani to provide some hope for Mumbai. Himanshu Rana and Shivam Chauhan
played with the intent of never allowing them to settle. It was an amazing batting
display by both Haryana batsmen as they chased down this target with 14 balls
to spare and 8 wickets remaining.
Before this match, Mumbai lost Delhi in the opening match.
Delhi posted 206 for 4 thanks to a superb knock by Nitish Rana. In reply,
Mumbai was bowled out for 130.
In the second match, Mumbai lost to Kerala by 8 wickets.
Thanks to contributions from Jaiswal, Tare, Surya Kumar Yadav, Lad, and Shivam
Dube, Mumbai posted 196 for 7 in 20 overs. Kerala chased down this massive
target with 8 wickets remaining and 25 balls to spare. Mohammed Azharudden made
a breath-taking 137 off 54 balls with 8 fours and 11 sixes.
Haryana 144 for 2 in 17.4 overs ( Himanshu Rana 75*, Shivam Chauhan
43*, Arjun Tendulkar 1/34) beat Mumbai 143 for 19.3 overs ( Atharava Anokolekar
37, Jayant Yadav 4/22, Chaprana 3/22) by 8 wickets.
Vidarbha lost to Madhya Pradesh in a Group D match played at
Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore. Vidarbha captain Akshay Wakhare won the toss
and decided to field first. It was disciplined bowling by Vidarbha who kept a lid on scoring. For Madhya Pradesh, Rajat Patidar made the top scorer with 50
while Rakesh Thakur scored 32 off 31 balls.
Vidarbha restricted Madhya Pradesh to a modest total of 136
for 9. In reply to 137, none of the Vidarbha batsmen were able to create pressure
on MP bowlers. Siddhesh Watth made 26 off 15 balls and could not go past the
target. Madhya Pradesh won the match by 21 runs.
Vidarbha began the tournament with a 3 wickets loss to
Rajasthan. Rajasthan captain Ashok Menaria won the toss and decided to field
first. The decision paid off for Rajasthan as they bowled out Vidarbha for 104
in 19.3 overs. Despite great bowling by Nalkande and Wakhare, Rajasthan chased down
the target with 33 balls remaining and 3 wickets to spare.
Vidarbha was outplayed by Saurashtra in their next match.
Batting first, Saurashtra posted a massive total of 233 for 7 and bowled out
Vidarbha for 154 to win the match by 79 runs.
Madhya Pradesh 136 for 9 in 20 overs ( Rajat Patidar 50,
Rakesh Thakur 32, Yash Thakur 3/25, Nalkande 2/27) beat Vidarbha 115 for 9 in
20 overs ( Siddesh Wath 26, Avesh Khan 5/17) by 21 runs.
