This Day That Year: AB de Villers created history
It was an amazing performance by one of the modern greats in
international cricket, AB de Villiers proved his class against West Indies
played at Johannesburg on 18th January 2015.
West Indies captain Jason Holder won the toss and decided to
field first. Rilee Rossouw and Hashim Amla started off cautiously before showing
their intent against the inexperienced West Indies bowling line-up. Both looked in
cracking form putting enough pressure with attacking strokes and kept on
ticking the scoreboard.
The South African openers kept on scoring with ease and laid
a strong foundation. Jerome Taylor got rid of Rossouw for a superb 128 off 115
balls to end 247 runs stand for opening wicket. AB de Villers came to the
crease and played with intent right from the word go. He decimated the West
Indies bowling reaching fifty off 16 balls. It remains the fastest fifty in ODI
cricket to date. AB de Villiers continued his aggressive approach and kept on
hitting the West Indies bowlers with ease playing innovative strokes.
AB de Villiers showed
great intent and reached his century off 31 balls. He broke the record of the
fastest century in ODI cricket surpassing Corey Anderson. His innings made sure
that South Africa piled on the misery and kept on hitting runs at will. de
Villiers was finally dismissed in the final over for a sensational knock scoring
149 off 44 balls with 9 fours and 16 sixes at a staggering strike rate of
338.64. de Villiers and Amla added 192 runs for the 2nd wicket. Amla remained not out on 153 off 142 balls.
South Africa hammered the West Indies line-up and posted their highest total in
ODI cricket off 439 for 2 in 50 overs.
In reply to 440 runs to win, West Indies was never in the
hunt and made 291 for 7. Dwayne Smith was the top scorer for the visitors with
64. South Africa registered an emphatic 148 runs. For his superb knock, AB de
Villiers was named the man of the match.
AB de Villiers made his ODI debut on 2nd February
2005. He played a total of 228 matches ( 218 innings) and scored 9577 runs with
an amazing average of 53.50. In his ODI career, the modern great hit 25 centuries
and 53 half-centuries. He played his last ODI match against India on Feb 16, 2018
and decided to retire from international cricket in the same year.
