This Day That Year: First ever ODI match played

It was a historic day as the first-ever ODI match was played between England and Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground, MCG on 5th January 1971.

Australian captain Bill Lawry won the toss and decided to field first. The match was reduced to 40 overs aside. Thanks to John Enrich 82, Keith Fletcher and Alan Knott 24 each, the hosts bowled out visitors for 190 in 39.4 overs. Ashley Mallett and Keith Stackpole took 3 wickets each for Australia, Graham McKenize grabbed 2 wickets.

Chasing 191 runs to win, Ian Chappell 60, Doug Walters 41 and Greg Chappell 22* helped the hosts chase down this target with 42 balls to spare and 5 wickets. For England, Ray Illingworth took 3 for 50 while Basil Oliveria and Ken Shutterworth picked 1 wicket each. John Enrich was awarded the man of the match award.

The One-day International Cricket has a total of 12 Permanent ODI teams including India, Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Afghanistan, West Indies, England, and Bangladesh. The first three World Cups in 1975, 1979, and 1983 was played in 60 overs with white clothes.

There have been some top quality ODI players in cricket including Kapil Dev, Vivan Richards, AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Brendon McCullum that changed the style of cricket. After that, it was changed to 50 overs aside.

Since the rule change, the batsmen have enjoyed and made use of batting conditions. From 2005-06 onwards, a total of 20 times that teams gone past 400 plus totals. South Africa achieved this remarkable record 6 times including chasing a massive score of 435, India scored 400 plus totals 4 times.

England achieved two highest totals in ODI format of 444 for 3 and 481 for 6, Sri Lanka twice, New Zealand once. In the history of ODI cricket, Rohit Sharma achieved the record of 3 double centuries including a record-breaking 264, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag once, Martin Guptill, Fakhar Zaman, Chris Gayle one time each.

With the power hitters and field restrictions in place, the batsmen put enough pressure on the bowlers making sure they achieve massive totals.
