Toyota Thailand Open 2021: Indian challenge ended in the semi-finals

The men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty's impressive run came to an end as they lost to Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia in two straight sets. The Indian pair started off brightly taking an early 4-2 lead. Both pairs took alternate points as Chirag and RankiReddy committed a lot of unforced errors putting into the net or hitting wide. At the mid-game interval, Chia and Soh had a slender 11-10 lead. After the mid-game interval, the Malaysian pair put the pressure on Indian pair and did not allow them to enter the game. Aaron and Wooi grabbed the first game at 21-18.

In the second game, Satwik and Chirag started off brightly taking an early 3-1 lead but again Malaysian took 4 successive points. The Indian pair roared back with good attacking play leveling the scores at 8-8. It was an aggressive display of badminton by the Malaysian pair who took an 11-8 lead at the interval. After the break, Satwik and Chirag tried their best to comeback into the game, but Chia and Soh kept the momentum going on. The Indian pair saved 3 match points but a mistake by Chirag Shetty helped Chia and Soh win the second game easily at 21-18.

The mixed doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwiksairaj RankiReddy went down fighting to the number 1 seed Thailand pair of Dechapol Puavaranukoh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai. It was an even start to the game as both pairs took alternate points putting pressure on each other. The match went from one side to another as the Thailand pair took a slender 11-10 lead at the interval. After the mid-game interval, the number 1 ranked Thai pair showed their class to dominate Ashwini and RankiReddy taking a 17-12 lead.

Dechapol and Sapsiree had a 20-17 lead, but Ashwini and RankiReddy saved three game points to level the scores at 20-20. The Thai player held their nerves to win the first game at 22-20.

The second game saw the Thailand pair played with aggression taking a commanding 11-6 lead at the interval. After the break, the Indian pair made a strong comeback to level the game at 15-15 and then went into the lead with a powerful smash.

Both pairs took alternate points till 18-18 before Satwiksairaj produced a superb smash as the Indian duo took the lead. The Indian pair held their nerves to win the 2nd game at 21-18.

It was a dominating performance by the Thailand pair who showed great badminton skills by hitting smashes as Ashwini and RankiReddy committed lots of mistakes. At the mid-game interval, the Thai pair led 11-9. After the break, the Thai player showed their class and never allowed the Indian pair a sniff in the game-winning it easily at 21-12 to move into the finals.

The Indian men’s doubles and mixed doubles pair had a dream run in the tournament before losing the semi-finals.
