This Day That Year: Indian spinner created record in T20Is
The young Indian leg spinner who represented the country in
Chess, Yuzvendra Chahal created a massive record during the final T20I match against
England played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore on 1st February
2017.
England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and decided to
field first. It was an ideal start for the visitors as Virat Kohli was run-out by
Chris Jordan. KL Rahul and Suresh Raina steadied the innings putting on 61 runs
for the 2nd wicket. Suresh quickfire 63 off 45 balls, the career-best score of 56 by MS Dhoni, and Yuvraj Singh superb cameo of 27 from 10 balls helped
Men in Blue post 202 for 6 in 20 overs.
Chahal struck in his first over itself by getting the wicket
of Sam Billings. With the partnership between the experienced duo of Eoin
Morgan and Joe Root were going strong, Chahal got the important breakthrough
dismissing England captain Morgan. Morgan and Root added 64 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Chahal created panic among the visitors batting-line up by getting rid
of Joe Root in the same over. He then dismissed Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, and Chris
Jordan to help India register a resounding 75 runs. With the series level at
1-1, India produced a dominating performance.
For his career-best figures of 6 for 25 in 4 overs, Chahal
was named the man of the match award. He became the first Indian bowler to take a five-wicket haul in T20Is. His 6 for 25, are the third-best figures by a bowler
in the shortest format.
Deepak Chahar holds the best figures as he grabbed 6 wickets
giving away 7 runs in 3.2 overs against Bangladesh on 10th November
2019.
Chahal made his T20I debut for Men in Blue against Zimbabwe
on 18th June 2016. Since then he has played 45 matches ( 45 innings)
and grabbed a total of 59 wickets at an economy of 8.29 runs per over. He has
taken 2 times four-wicket haul and once five-wicket hauls in the shorter
format.
