India versus England 4th Test 2nd Day: Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar knocks puts India in good position

 

Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar brilliant partnership helped India in a good position at the end of the 2nd day of the 4th Test match played at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Friday.

Starting on the overnight score of 24 for 1, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma began cautiously against disciplined England bowling with James Anderson and Ben Stokes. Anderson troubled Rohit with deliveries coming inwards. Rohit Sharma hit the first boundary off the day while Pujara was troubled by Stokes. Jack Leach struck for England dismissing Pujara. Pujara decided to review the decision and it remained out. Rohit and Pujara added 40 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Soon after Ben Stokes produced a beauty that bounced as Kohli poked the ball outside the stumps to leave India in some trouble at 41 for 3. Ajiyanka Rahane looked in good touch hitting boundaries off bad balls while Rohit Sharma remained steady. James Anderson troubled Rahane and eventually dismissed him off the final ball before the lunch break as Ben Stokes took a good low catch at slips. Rahane and Rohit Sharma added 39 runs for the 4th wicket. India went into the lunch break at 80 for 4.

After the lunch break, Pant and Rohit Sharma played with caution against the England bowlers. Rohit hit boundaries off bad balls putting little pressure. Ben Stokes provided the breakthrough dismissing Rohit with a good delivery coming inwards. Rohit decided to review the decision and was retained due to the umpire’s call. Rohit and Pant added 41 runs for the 5th wicket. Ashwin decided to review the decision for a caught behind as it hit the shoulder. Pant played with maturity and rotated the strike. Jack Leach dismissed Ashwin hitting Pope at short midwicket to leave India in trouble at 146 for 6. Before the stroke of tea break, Pant survived a close LBW shout given not out by the umpire and it was retained due to the umpire’s call. At the end of the 2nd session, India made 153 for 6.

The third session saw Pant looked confident and reached his fifty off 82 balls. Pant showed his class by smashing James Anderson and other bowlers all over the park. England decided to review the decision and it was retained due to the ball missing the stumps. Joe Root gambled taking the 2nd new ball. Pant simply stunned James Anderson hitting him for a boundary via a reverse sweep. Pant and Sundar smashed boundaries at will. Pant completed his century off 115 balls. Soon after, trying to hit another big shot, Root took a simple catch at short midwicket. Pant and Sundar added 113 runs for the 7th wicket.

Washington Sundar looked composed with his strokes and completed his fifty off 96 balls. Sundar was given out by the umpire and the decision was overturned as it hit the inside edge. The Indian batsmen did not allow Dom Bess to settle. Sundar and Patel added unbeaten 35 runs for the 8th wicket. India ended the 2nd day at 294 for 7 with a lead of 89 runs.

India 294 for 7 in 94 overs ( Pant 101, Washington Sundar 60*, Rohit Sharma 49, Anderson 3/40, Leach 2/66) lead England 205 in 75.5 overs ( Stokes 55, Lawrence 46, Patel 4/68, Ashwin 3/47) by 89 runs.
