New Zealand versus Australia 3rd T20I: All-round Australia thrash New Zealand to stay alive in the series
Australia produced a dominating performance to defeat the
hosts New Zealand in the 3rd T20I played at Westpac Stadium, Wellington
on Wednesday.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and decided
to field first. It could have been an ideal start as Aaron Finch survived a
close LBW shout. Williamson decided to review but the decision was upheld due
to the umpire's call. In the next over, Trent Boult dismissed Matthew Wade with a
good catch by Martin Guptill at slips.
Joshua Phillippe came to the crease and took the attack to
New Zealand bowlers along with Aaron Finch. At the end of the first six overs,
Australia scored 47 for 1. After the field restrictions, Finch and Philippe
looked in decent touch putting pressure on the Kiwis bowlers. Ish Sodhi
provided the breakthrough dismissing Philippe with a good catch by Guptill at
long-on. Philippe and Finch added 83 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Glenn Maxwell joined in with Aaron Finch and made the
batting look easy. Finch completed his fifty off 34 balls by hitting six off a
no-ball. Maxwell showed an array of strokes making life tough for the Kiwis. Ish
Sodhi struck in his final over to get rid of Australian captain Finch for well-made
69 off 44 balls. Finch and Maxwell added 64 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Maxwell was simply sensational with his innovative strokes
and completed his fifty off just 25 balls. He smacked 28 runs off James Neesham
in the 17th over. He continued brilliance in Southee’s over before
Tim Seifert took a good low catch. Maxwell made a brilliant 70 off 31 balls
with 8 fours and 5 sixes. Stoinis did not face many balls when Maxwell was in a belligerent mood putting on 41 runs for the 4th wicket.
Boult and Jamieson bowled superb last 2 overs giving away
just 14 runs. Thanks to Maxwell, Finch, and Philippe, Australia posted 208 for 4
in 20 overs.
Chasing 209 runs to win, Martin Guptill looked in sublime
touch putting pressure on the Australian bowlers right from word go. The
debutant Riley Meredith got a wicket in his first over dismissing Tim Seifert as
Stoinis took a simple catch at covers. Guptill and Seifert put on 20 runs in 2 overs.
Guptill made the batting look easy hitting big shots making life tough for
Australian. Meredith struck again to get rid of Kiwi captain Williamson with a
superb delivery. Conway came to the crease and played with intent. At the end
of the first six overs, New Zealand made 59 for 2.
Adam Zampa into his 2nd over dismissed the
dangerous Martin Guptill as Ashton Agar took a simple catch at long-off denting
Kiwis hopes of winning. Conway and Guptill added 32 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Phillips and Conway played with intent putting pressure on Australian
bowlers. Ashton Agar was bought into the attack and broke the backbone of New
Zealand batting dismissing Phillips, Conway, and James Neesham in the same over.
Agar then took wickets of Tim Southee, Mark Chapman, and
Kyle Jamieson to end with brilliant figures of 6 for 30. Kane Richardson
dismissed Ish Sodhi with a return catch as Australia registered an emphatic 64
runs win.
Australia 208 for 4 in 20 overs ( Maxwell 70, Finch 69, Phillippe
43, Sodhi 2/32) beat New Zealand 144 in 17.1 overs ( Guptill 43, Conway 38,
Agar 6/30) by 64 runs.
For his figures of 6 for 30 in 4 overs, Ashton Agar was named
man of the match award. New Zealand still leads the series 2-1. The fourth
match will be played on 5th March on the same ground.
