New Zealand versus Australia 5th T20I: New Zealand register an emphatic win to seal the series
New Zealand produced a dominating performance in the
deciding T20I against Australia played at Westpac Stadium, Wellington on
Sunday.
Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to
bat first. It was not an ideal start for the visitors as Trent Boult produced a
beauty to dismiss Joshua Philippe. Aaron Finch and Matthew Wade took the attack
to Kiwi’s bowlers with positive strokes. Both played according to the merit keeping
the scoreboard ticking. At the end of the first six overs, Australia made 47
for 1.
After the field restrictions, the New Zealand captain bought in
Mark Chapman and Ish Sodhi to give the hosts a wicket. Finch and Wade continued
their intent laying a strong foundation for a massive total. Sodhi provided the
breakthrough dismissing Finch with lovely catch by Santer. Finch and Wade added
66 runs for the 2nd wicket. In the next over, Mark Chapman dismissed
the dangerous Maxwell to put Australia on the backfoot.
Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade tried to put another good partnership,
but Boult struck to dismiss Wade. New Zealand bowlers kept on taking wickets at
regular intervals making life tough for the Australian batsmen. Ish Sodhi and
Southee stopped the flow of runs as they restricted Australia to just 142 for 8
in 20 overs.
Chasing a modest total of 143 runs to win, Martin Guptill
and Devon Conway started off brightly with aggressive stroke play making life
tough for the Australian new-ball bowlers. At the end of the first six overs,
New Zealand openers scored 51.
After the field restrictions, Guptill and Conway maintained
the pressure on Australian bowlers. Guptill looked in great touch to complete
his fifty off 33 balls. Australia was desperate to take a wicket as they took
a review, but the decision remained as it not out. Meredith dismissed Conway and
Kane Williamson off successive deliveries, but it was too little too late for
Australian. Despite some hiccups in the middle, Philips’s cameo ensured that
New Zealand won the match easily by 7 wickets with 27 balls to spare. Guptill was
dismissed for a superb 71 off 46 balls.
New Zealand 143 for 3 in 15.3 overs (Martin Guptill 71, Phillips
34*, Riley Meredith 2/39) beat Australia 142 for 8 in 20 overs (Wade 44, Finch
36, Sodhi 3/24, Boult 2/26) by 7 wickets.
For his 71 off 46 balls, Martin Guptill was named the man of
the match award. Ish Sodhi was awarded the man of the series award for his consistent
performance.
