Stats: Afghan batsmen creates history in Test matches
Former Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan was at his sublime
best during the opening day of the 2nd Test match against Zimbabwe
played at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan won the toss and decided
to bat first. They lost an early wicket of Javed Ahmadi cheaply. Rahmat Shah
and Ibrahim Zadran put on 50 runs before Shah was run out. It was a good
partnership by Zadran, and Hashmatullah Shahidi as Afghanistan went into the
lunch break at 83 for 2.
After the lunch break, Zadran completed his fifty off 93
balls while Shahidi kept him good company. Ryan Burl dismissed Zadran ending 65
runs for the 3rd wicket. Asghar Afghan came to the crease and showed
his class with positive intent along with Shahidi. At the end of the tea session,
Afghanistan scored 187 for 3.
Asghar Afghan kept the momentum going and reached his fifty
off 64 balls while Shahidi was solid with defensive technique to complete a half-century off 154 balls. Zimbabwe captain decided to take the 2nd
new ball immediately but Afghan and Shahidi made the batting look easy. Afghan-led from the front to reach century off 121 balls. Afghan remained not out on
106 off 125 balls with 12 fours and 2 sixes. He and Shahidi helped Afghanistan
end the first day in a strong position at 307 for 3.
Rahmat Shah became the first Afghanistan batsman to score a
Test century against Bangladesh at Chattgoram, Bangladesh on 5th September
2019. He made 102 in the first innings helping Afghanistan post 342. His
performance led him to the man of the match award.
Asghar Afghan became the second Afghanistan batsman to smash
a century in Test cricket. He played according to merit and put on a superb
display to put Afghanistan in a commanding position. The veteran would be looking
to score big tomorrow and help the Afghans to post a massive total.
