Swiss Open 2021: PV Sindhu qualify for finals, other 2 knocked out
PV Sindhu was the only Indian shuttler to make it into the
finals while Kidambi Srikanth and men’s doubles pair of RankiReddy and Chirag
Shetty lost at the Super 300 Swiss Open played at Basel, Switzerland on
Saturday.
PV Sindhu defeated Denmark’s Mia Blichedft of Denmark in two
straight sets. In the first game, both players took alternate points and
maintained this till 8-8. Sindhu played with aggression and had an 11-8 lead at
the interval. After the break, the Indian dominated the Danish player taking
17-12 lead. Blichedft took 5 points in succession as Sindhu committed few
mistakes and leveled the scores at 17-17. Both players continued this till
20-20 before the Indian won the first game at 22-20.
The second game saw Sindhu dominating the Danish player with
smashes and drops shots. Sindhu was simply unstoppable taking an 11-5 lead at the
interval. After the break, the Indian maintained the domination winning it at
21-10 to qualify for the finals. It was Sindhu’s first final in the international circuit
since the World Badminton Championship gold medal in 2019.
Kidambi Srikanth lost to number 1 seeded Denmark player
Victor Axselen in two straight games. It was a great start by Axselen right from
the word go putting Srikanth under pressure with his smashes. At the mid-game
interval, Axselen had a commanding 11-4 lead. After the break, Denmark
maintained its domination and won the first game easily at 21-13.
In the second game, Axselen started off brightly and put
Srikanth under pressure. At the mid-game interval, Denmark player-led 11-6.
After the break, the Indian made a strong comeback with lovely smashes and
produced some sensational badminton to level the scores at 17-17. It was a
superb fight by Srikanth who hit the shuttle out as Axselen won the second game
22-20 to qualify for the finals.
The men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag
Shetty lost to Denmark Kim Astrup and Rasmussen in two straight games. It was an
aggressive start by the Danish player who made life tough for the young Indian
pair and took an 11-6 lead at the interval. After the break, Astrup and Rasmussen
maintained their dominance winning it easily by 21-10.
In the second game, it was a closely fought affair with both
pairs fighting for each point. Whenever one pair looked to go ahead, the
opponent fought back strongly. At the mid-game interval, RankiReddy, and Chirag
Shetty led 11-10. After the break, the Indian pair committed mistakes as the
Danish pair capitalized to win the 2nd game at 21-17 to move into the finals.
