Swiss Open 2021: PV Sindhu settles for silver

PV Sindhu settled for silver as she lost a one-sided final to Carolina Marin of Spain played at Switzerland, Basel on Sunday.

It was a close start by both players who played long rallies and equaled at 4-4. After that, Marin played with aggression maintaining pressure on PV Sindhu. At the mid-game interval, the Spaniard took an 11-7 lead. After the break, Marin looked in complete control and produced smashes making life tough for the Indian, and won the first game easily at 21-12.

The second game saw Carolina Marin played with aggression and maintained consistent pressure on Indian with smashes taking a commanding 5-0 lead. Marin was simply unstoppable with her smashes to take a commanding 11-2 lead at the interval. After the interval, Spaniard kept on putting pressure on the Indian and won the game with 21-5 to take the women’s singles title.

It was an impressive performance by PV Sindhu after a disappointing outing in the previous three tournaments. The Indian showed their class in the Swiss Open 2021 winning the opening match against Yigit in straight sets by 21-16, 21-19.

She then won the 2nd round match against Iris Wang beating her by 21-13, 21-14 to move into the quarterfinals. The Indian won a closely fought game against Busnan Ongbamburghan of Thailand in two straight sets by 21-16, 23-21 and entered the semi-finals. She defeated Mia Blichedft of Denmark in two straight sets by 22-20, 21-10 and made it into the finals.

The Indian shuttlers had a great outing in the Swiss Open 2021. Kidambi Srikanth, men’s doubles pair of Chirag Shetty and RankiReddy reached the semi-finals, Sameer Verma and HS Prannoy lost in the first round, Sourabh Verma progressed into 2nd round, Ajay Jayaram, Sai Praneeth, and the mixed doubles pair of RankiReddy and Ponnappa made it into the quarterfinals.

Saina Nehwal lost in the first round while Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy made it into the 2nd round.

The Indians would now take part in the All-England Badminton Championship.

Indonesia Open 2025: Satwik/Chirag Enter Quarters, Others Crash Out

  The men’s doubles pairing of Satwik/Chirag entered the quarterfinals while other 3 Indians lost in the 2 nd round of the Super 1000 Indonesia Open played at Jakarta on 5 th June 2025. Satwik/Chirag Shetty edged past R Kjaer and Sogaard of Denmark in three games. The first game began with both pairs fighting for each point. Kjaer and Sogaard displayed great service skills.   The Indian shuttlers had a disappointing outing as only one of them made it into the quarterfinals of the Super 1000 Malaysia Open 2025 played at Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur on 9 th January. HS Prannoy, women’s doubles pair of Tressa Jolly suffered narrow losses while Bansod, mixed doubles pair of Crasto/Kapila, and other pair lost in a one-sided affair.
