This Day That Year: India lifts the Under 19 World Cup for 2nd time
Under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, the Indian Cricket Team
lifted the Under 19 World Cup as they defeated South Africa in a rain-curtailed
match played at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 2nd March 2008.
South African captain Wayne Parnell won the toss and decided
to field first. The decision paid off as Wayne Parnell and Arnold picked 2
early wickets to leave India on the backfoot. Indian captain Virat Kohli and
Tanmay Srivastava steadied the Indian innings as both played according to the
merit. Malan broke the partnership dismissing Kohli. Kohli and Srivastava added
47 runs for the 3rd wicket.
After the fall of Virat Kohli’s wicket, South Africa kept on
picking wickets at regular intervals and bowled out India for a paltry total of
159 in 45.4 overs. Saurabh Tiwary and Manish Pandey scored 20 runs apiece but other
Indian batsmen struggled to time the ball.
With a revised target of 116 runs to win from 25 overs, it
was an amazing start for India as they bowled with precision and took 4 quick
wickets at the score of 22. Reeza Hendricks and captain Wayne Parnell steadied
the South African innings putting on 50 runs for the 5th wicket.
Ravindra Jadeja made an important breakthrough getting rid of Reeza Hendricks
with a lovely catch by Goswami.
The match went down to the last over as South Africa required
19 runs. Siddarth Kaul got South African Wayne Parnell and made sure that The Indian team won the match easily. Kaul dismissed Barnes of the last ball to
help India register 12 runs win via the DLS method.
After helping Team India to World Cup win, Kohli, Ravindra
Jadeja, Manish Pandey, Siddarth Kaul made it into the senior team. Kohli,
Jadeja is the backbone of the senior team in all formats.
India 159 in 45.4 overs (Tanmay Srivastava 46, Manish Pandey
20, Wayne Parnell 2/21) beat South Africa 103 for 8 in 25 overs ( Reeza
Hendricks 35, Parnell 29, Ajitesh Agral 2/7, Jadeja 2/25) by 12 runs DLS
method.
For his figures of 2 for 7 in 5 overs, Agral was named the
man of the match. In the batting department, Tanmay Srivastava and Virat Kohli
were among the runs for Team India. Kohli made 235 runs from 6 matches ( 6
innings) with the best score of 100. Srivastava ended the tournament as the leading
run-getter with 262 runs from 6 matches ( 6 innings) with 2 half-centuries.
Iqbal Abdulla and Ravindra Jadeja picked the most wickets
for Team India as a part of the winning team.
