This Day That Year: Ireland created record in World Cup
It was an amazing game of cricket as the minnows Ireland
stunned England played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore on 2nd
March 2011.
England captain Andrew Strauss won the toss and decided to
bat first. Kevin Pietersen looked in great touch right from word while Strauss
also put Ireland bowlers under pressure. Dockrell got the breakthrough for
Ireland dismissing Strauss. Strauss and Pietersen put on 91 runs laying a strong
foundation.
Pietersen reached his fifty-off 40 balls while Trott also made
the batting look easy keeping the scoreboard ticking. After the fall of
Pietersen wicket, Trott, and Ian Bell put on a brilliant display of batting with elegant
strokes.
Trott completed his fifty off 55 balls while Ian Bell
reached half-century off 61 balls. With things looking out of control for
Ireland, Mooney struck to get rid of Ian Bell. Bell and Trott added 167 runs
for the 3rd wicket. Trent Johnston and Mooney kept on picking
wickets in the death overs to restrict England at 327 for 8 in 50 overs.
Chasing 328 runs to win, Ireland got off a disastrous start
losing the wicket of William Porterfield off the very first ball. Paul Stirling
and Ed Joyce put England bowlers under pressure with aggressive hitting by both
batsmen. Bresnan ended the partnership getting the wicket of Stirling. Stirling
and Joyce added 62 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Kevin O Brien came at the crease with scoreboard reading 106
for 4. Gary Wilson also fell to leave Ireland in big trouble. O Brien started
the innings on a positive note hitting boundaries and put England bowlers under
pressure reaching fifty off just 30 balls. The experienced Kevin looked in
great touch and kept Ireland's hopes alive. He kept on hitting boundaries at will
making England bowlers lost.
Kevin O Brien took the England bowlers to cleaners and
reached a century off just 50 balls. It still holds the fastest century by a
batsman in World history. A brilliant run-out ended the innings for Cusack.
Cusack and O Brien added 162 runs for the 6th wicket. Kevin O Brien
was simply sensational being dismissed for a superb 113 off 63 balls with 13
fours and 6 sixes.
With 3 runs needed to win from 6 balls, John Mooney hit the
winning runs and helped Ireland stun England in the highest run-chase in World
Cup history.
Ireland 329 for 7 in 49.1 overs (Kevin O Brien 113, Cusack
47, Swann 3/47) beat England 327 for 8 in 50 overs ( Jonathan Trott 92, Ian
Bell 81, John Mooney 4/63) by 3 wickets.
Kevin O Brien was named the man of the match award for his
113 off 63 balls.
