This Day That Year: South Africa won their maiden ICC trophy.
Under the captaincy of Aiden Markram, the South African
Cricket Team won their maiden ICC title at any level. They defeated Pakistan in the 2014 Under 19 World Cup finals played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai
on 1st March.
Pakistani captain Sami Aslam won the toss and decided to bat
first. It was an outstanding bowling effort by the South African Under 19 side
who rattled the Pakistani batting line-up. Imam and Sami Aslam provided a
decent start before Rabada dismissed Imam. Corbin Bosch and other South African
pace bowlers showed their class and skittled out Pakistan for a paltry total of
131 in 44.3 overs. Bosch took 4 for 15 in 7.3 overs while Justin Dill and Valli
grabbed 2 wickets each, Rabada and Sigwli took 1 wicket each.
In reply to 132, South Africa lost 2 early wickets of Fortuin
and Jason Smith. Captain Aiden Markram and Oldfield revived the innings with a
brilliant 71 runs stand for the 3rd wicket. Oldfield made 40 off 68
balls keeping South Africa on track. Yassen Valli was dismissed cheaply while
Markram remained steady reaching fifty off 98 balls. Dial and Markram kept the
momentum helping South Africa reach the target with 6 wickets remaining and 47
balls to spare. For his 4 for 15 in 7.3 overs, Corbin Bosch was named the man
of the match award.
South Africa was placed with West Indies, Zimbabwe, and Canada
in Group C. They won all their 3 matches in the Group stage. Their performance
in the league stage was superb winning by 94 runs against West Indies, 45 runs
against Canada, and ended with a 7 wicket win over Zimbabwe.
South Africa thrashed Afghanistan by 9 wickets in the quarterfinals
to set up the semi-finals against Australia. It was another dominating performance
as they won the semi-finals by 80 runs to qualify for their maiden ICC finals.
Aiden Markram led from the front scoring 370 runs from 6
matches (6 innings) with 2 centuries and 1 half-century. He made his best score
in the tournament was 120* and 3rd highest run-getter in the
tournament. In the bowling department, Kagiso Rabada did an amazing job by
grabbing 14 wickets from 5 matches ( 5 innings) at an economy of 3.10 runs per
over. He registered the best figures of 6 for 25.
South Africa had never a major ICC tournament before this.
They always choke under pressure and look out of sorts in knockout matches.
