FIH Pro Hockey League Match 1: India edge past Argentina in a thrilling encounter
The Indian men’s hockey team showed their character as they defeated
Olympic Champions Argentina in the first leg of the Pro Hockey League match played
at Bruno Aires on Saturday.
It was an action-packed first quarter as both teams played
attacking hockey but could not convert into goals. Both teams showed great
fighting spirit and ended the first half at 0-0.
The second quarter saw great action again with both teams making
attacking moves. India earned a penalty corner and Harmanpreet Singh converted
into a goal to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.
Argentina showed attacking skills and leveled the scores as Ferriero Martin
produced a field goal in the 28th minute. Before the end of the
first half, Martin scored from a penalty corner to give the Argentina side 2-1
lead.
In the third quarter, the Indian team tried their best to
convert goals but the Argentina defense was up to the mark. Both teams played
attacking hockey as 3 Indian players got yellow cards. The score remained 2-1
at the end of the third quarter.
India played attacking hockey in the final quarter putting
pressure but the Argentina defense was solid. Despite the Indian team getting
penalty corners, the hosts showed fighting spirit and kept India at bay. In the
dying minutes of the match, India earned a penalty corner and Harmanpreet Singh
converted into a goal to level the scores at 2-2. With 50 seconds left on the
clock, Ferriero scored his third goal but was not given as a back pass stick
led to a goal and it was disallowed. The match ended at 2-2 and went to the
shootouts.
In the penalty shootouts, Harmanpreet Singh could not
convert as Vivaldi deceived the Indian. After that, P Sreejesh showed his
remarkable skills as he saved brilliant goals and other penalty takers
converted them into goals. The Indian Team won the shootouts at 3-2. With this win,
India earned 2 including 1 from the draw and the other from the shootout.
India will play their second match of the leg on Sunday. It
promises to be an exciting encounter as Manpreet Singh’s India would look to
iron out the flaws.
