This Day That Year: West Indies cricket teams create history
It was a historic day for West Indies cricket as their men’s
and women’s team won the World T20 title played at different venues on 3rd
April 2016.
West Indies women stunned Australia in the finals played
at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Australian captain Meg Lanning won the toss
and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start for the defending Champions
as they lost an early wicket of Alyssa Healy.
The experienced duo of Villani and captain Meg Lanning
steadied the Australian innings by scoring runs easily putting pressure on West
Indies bowlers. Deandra Dottin provided the much-needed breakthrough for West
Indies dismissing Villani for 52. Villani and Lanning added 77 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Ellyse Perry also contributed valuable runs while Lanning made 52 also.
West Indies bowlers made a good comeback in death overs picking wickets and not
allowing Australia to score runs freely. At the end of the 20 overs, the Australian
women’s team posted 148 for 5.
Chasing 149 runs to win, Hayley Mathews and West Indies
captain Stefanie Taylor laid a strong foundation putting up 120 runs for the
opening wicket. West Indies openers made half-centuries. Dottin remained not
out on 18 off 12 balls while Cooper just faced 3 balls scoring 3 runs to help West
Indies chase down the target with 3 balls to spare. It was an amazing
performance by the West Indies women’s team who showed tremendous skills in winning their maiden T20 title.
The West Indies women’s Cricket Team were placed with
England, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh in Group B. They came second to England
with 6 points. West Indies held their nerves defeating New Zealand in a closely
fought 2nd semi-finals played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on 31st
March 2016.
Under the captaincy of Darren Sammy, the West Indies men’s
Cricket Team defeated England in a thrilling final played at the iconic Eden
Gardens, Kolkata.
West Indies captain Darren Sammy won the toss and decided to
field first. It was an ideal start as they took 3 early wickets with a scoreboard
reading 23. Joe Root and Jos Buttler steadied the innings putting on 61 runs
for the 4th wicket. Root played a great knock under pressure
reaching his fifty off 33 balls. David Willey cameo along with others helped
England post 155 for 9 in 20 overs.
Chasing 156 runs to win, West Indies lost 3 early wickets of
Johnson Charles, Chris Gayle, and Lendl Simmons cheaply. Marlon Samuels showed his
class playing with intent putting pressure back on the England bowlers. Dwayne
Bravo gave Samuels good support adding 75 runs for the 4th wicket.
Andre Russell and Darren Sammy went cheaply.
The match went down right down to the wire. With 19 runs
required off 6 balls, Carlos Braithwaite hit 4 successive sixes helping West
Indies chase down this target with 2 balls to spare and 4 wickets remaining.
Samuels remained not out on 85 off 66 balls while Braithwaite scored 34 off 10
balls.
For his unbeaten 85 off 56 balls, Marlon Samuels was awarded
the man of the match. West Indies Cricket Team lost only one match in the whole tournament to Afghanistan.
In the 2nd semi-finals played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, West Indies stunned hosts India chasing down a massive target of 193.
