Netherlands opens their account in ODI Super League

 

Netherlands started their ICC ODI Super League tournament with a thrilling win over Ireland in the first One-day international played at Utrecht on Wednesday.

Netherlands captain Pieter Seelar won the toss and decided to bat first. Stephen Myburg and Max O Donald gave a steady start putting some pressure on the Ireland bowling line-up with cracking strokes. Craig Young got the breakthrough for Ireland getting rid of Myburg as Netherlands openers added 32 runs.

Max O Donald looked impressive with his strokes. At the end of the first 10 overs, Netherlands made 49 for 1. Simi Singh dismissed the dangerous O Donald and that resulted in a collapse as Ireland took 4 wickets in the gap of 2 runs leaving the Netherlands in tatters at 53 for 5. Bas de Leede and Saqib Zulfiqar showed some resistance keeping the scoreboard ticking hitting boundaries and making life tough for Ireland.

McBrine got the breakthrough for Ireland dismissing de Leede. De Leede and Zulfiqar added 49 runs for the 6th wicket. A superb run-out by McBrine resulted in the wicket of Zulfiqar to leave Netherlands in massive trouble at 102 for 7. Tim Van der Gugten upped the ante with a flurry of sixes putting Ireland bowlers under immense pressure. Logan Van Beek provided some important hits keeping the scoreboard ticking making life tough for Ireland. Craig Young finally got the breakthrough getting dangerous Gugten for a quickfire 49 off 53 balls with 1 four and 4 sixes. Gugten and Beek added 72 runs for the 8th wicket. Despite his efforts, Ireland bowled out the Netherlands for 195 in 50 overs.

Chasing 196 runs to win, it was a disastrous start for Ireland as they lost 3 quick wickets of William Porterfield, Andy Balbirnie and Harry Tector in the first 3 overs. Paul Stirling and Dockrell steadied the ship for Ireland against good, disciplined bowling. At the end of the first 10 overs, Ireland made 35 for 3.

After the field restrictions, Dockrell was bowled by Gover. Dockrell and Stirling added 32 runs for the 4th wicket. Netherland’s captain Seelar got rid of Tucker to leave Ireland in big trouble at 69 for 5. Paul Stirling kept one end up with some classy shots and reached his fifty off 88 balls. Simi Singh also looked impressive and added some important runs with Stirling. Der Gugten dismissed dangerous Stirling to end 66 runs for the 6th wicket. Andy McBrine came to the crease and hit some valuable runs putting Ireland on course for a win.

Seelar struck twice in succession to dismiss McBrine and McCarthy. With 12 runs needed off the final over, Simi Singh was brilliantly run out by a superb throw from de Leede and Edwards whipping bails off. Van Beek held his nerves to gave away just 1 run to help the Netherlands seal a thrilling 1 run win.

Netherlands 195 in 50 overs (Van der Gugten 49, Craig Young 3/34, Josh Little 3/32) beat Ireland 194 for 9 in 50 overs (Paul Stirling 69, Simi Singh 45, Pieter Seelar 3/27, Van Beek 2/44) by 1 run.

For his match-changing 49, Van der Gugten was awarded the man of the match. Netherlands takes a 1-0 lead and 10 points in ICC ODI Super League. The 2nd ODI will be played at the same ground on 4th June.
