England versus Pakistan 2nd ODI: England seal the series with a thumping win
England proved their worth as they decimated Pakistan in the 2nd One-day international played at Lords, London on Saturday.
The match reduced to 47 overs, Pakistan captain Babar Azam
won the toss and decided to bowl first. It was an ideal start for the visitors
as Hasan Ali dismissed stars of the first ODI Dawid Malan and Zak Crawley without
opening their accounts. Phil Salt looked in decent touch putting pressure on the
Pakistani bowling line-up. James Vince and Salt did a great job hitting
boundaries. At the end of the first 10 overs, England raced away to 72 for 2.
After the field restrictions, Vince and Salt continued their
attacking approach making life tough for the visitors. Salt completed his
maiden ODI fifty off 41 balls while Vince also reached half-century off 36
balls. The part-time bowler Saud Shakeel got the breakthrough getting rid of
Salt for well-made 60. Salt and Vince added 97 runs for 3rd wicket.
Stand-in captain Ben Stokes showed great attacking skills keeping the
scoreboard ticking. Shahdab Khan got rid of well-set Vince with a beauty to
leave England in some trouble. Hasan Ali dismissed three wickets in quick
succession getting Stokes, Simpson, and Craig Overton to leave England at 160
for 7. Lewis Gregory and Brydon Carse steadied the ship for England keeping the
scoreboard ticking. Both batsmen showed great skills against good quality
bowling.
Haris Rauf bowled a superb bouncer to dismiss Gregory ending
69 runs for the 8th wicket. Rauf produced cracking delivery getting
the wicket Carse. Saqib Mahmood and Matt Parkinson added some valuable runs
before Hasan Ali dismissed Saqib grabbing 5 wickets. Pakistan bowled out
England for 247 in 45.2 overs.
Chasing 248 runs to win, Imam UL Haq was dismissed by Lewis
Gregory in his first over giving easy catch for Simpson. Fakhar Zaman looked
out of sorts not able to time the ball. Babar Azam looked in decent touch
hitting boundaries before Saqib Mahmood dismissed him for 2nd time.
Saqib Mahmood rattled the Pakistani batting getting rid of Mohammad Rizwan to
leave visitors in trouble at 36. At the end of the first 10 overs, Pakistan made 38
for 3.
After the field restrictions, Craig Overton and Carse were
bought into the attack. Overton troubled Shakeel before dismissing Fakhar Zaman
with a big gap, castling stumps to leave Pakistan in massive trouble at 53 for
4. Shoaib Masqood showed some intent against Overton hitting him for 2 sixes
before the latter dismissed him with a bouncer as Simpson took a good catch.
Masqood and Shakeel added 33 runs for the 5th wicket. Shahdab Khan
joined in with Shakeel stitching an important partnership. Gregory dismissed Khan
tried to uppercut giving an easy catch to Parkinson at third man. Khan and
Shakeel added 29 runs for the 6th wicket.
A superb catch by Simpson resulted in the wicket of Faheem
Ashraf to leave Pakistan in massive trouble at 118 for 7. Hasan Ali showed
great skills hitting 22 runs off Matt Parkinson over to give visitors some
hope. Saud Shakeel played with intent keeping the scoreboard ticking. Ali’s
quickfire ended as he provided an easy catch to Overton. Shakeel and Ali added 34 runs
for the 8th wicket. Shaheen Shah Afridi was superb with his
defensive technique while Shakeel kept his composure to reach his maiden fifty
off 70 balls. Soon after, Shakeel's good innings ended as he tried hitting a big
shot off Parkinson to give a simple catch to Overton. Afridi and Shakeel added 40
runs for the 9th wicket. A superb catch by Simpson helped England
registered an emphatic 52 runs.
England 247 in 45.2 overs ( Salt 60, Vince 56, Hasan Ali
5/51) beat Pakistan 195 in 41 overs ( Shakeel 56, Ali 31, Gregory 3/44) by 52
runs.
With this win, England sealed the 3 match series by 2-0. For his all-around contribution, Lewis Gregory won the man of the match award. The hosts, England continued their domination in the ICC ODI Super League points table.
