Euro Cup 2020: Spain and Italy move into the semi-finals.
It was an amazing night of football as Spain and Italy moved
into the semi-finals in the respective two matches played on Friday.
Spain defeated Switzerland in the first quarterfinals played
at St Petersburg. It was an ideal start for the Spanish team as Zakaria conceded
an own goal in the 8th minute. After the initial struggle, the Switzerland
side put pressure on Spain's defense but was not able to convert into goals.
Spain had more possession, but Ian Sommer produced some sensational saves
denying Spain. At the end of the first half, Spain led 1-0.
The second half saw some attacking football from both teams.
Ian Sommer was the star of the show as he continued his sensational form. The experienced
Shaqiri converted a brilliant goal to help Switzerland level the scores at 1-1
in the 68th minute. Frueler was handed a red card in the 77th
minute that gave Spain the advantage. Despite Switzerland being 10 men, their
defense was solid and Sommer showed his class denying Spain the winner. At the
end of the full-time, Spain and Switzerland ended at 1-1.
The match went into the extra time, but Spain could not go
past Ian Sommer. Sommer showed his class by produced some sensational saves
again. Spain continued to attack but Switzerland kept them at bay to take the match
into penalty shootouts.
In the penalty shootouts, Busquets hit the post and went out.
Gavranovic converted the penalty to give Switzerland a 1-0 lead. Schar, Akanji, and Vargas missed the penalty as Spain's goalkeeper did a superb job. Olmo, Gerard, and Oyarzabal held under pressure winning the match by 3-1 to move into the
semi-finals.
Italy continued their brilliant form in the tournament
defeating number 1 ranked side Belgium in the second quarterfinals played at
Allianz Arena, Munich. It was an aggressive start by both teams, but the Italian
team held the possession much better. Barella scored a superb goal in the 31st
minute to give Italy a 1-0 lead.
After that goal, Italy put more pressure on Belgium's
defense. Insgine gave Italy a 2-0 lead in the 44th minute with another
superb goal. Lukaku converted the penalty in extra-time of first-half ending the first
half at 2-1 in favor of Italy.
The second half saw Belgium try their best to level the
score but the Italian defense was solid. Belgium had 9 corners taken but could not penetrate
Italian goalkeeper. Despite all efforts, Italy won the match by 2-1 and book a
place in the semi-finals against Spain.
Czech Republic and Denmark will face in the third quarterfinals
while England will face Ukraine in the final quarterfinals today.
