Indian women versus England women 1st T20I: Nat Sciver brilliance ensures England women win
Thanks to a special effort by Nat Sciver, the England women’s
cricket team defeated India via DLS method in the first T20I match played at County
Ground, Northamptonshire on Friday.
Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and decided to
field first. Shikha Pandey and Arundhati Reddy started off brilliantly not
allowing the England openers Danielle Wyatt and Beaumont to score runs easily.
The fielding was brilliant as Radha Yadav was outstanding. After the initial
struggle, Wyatt showed some intent and put Indian bowlers under some pressure.
Indian captain Kaur decided to bring Deepti Sharma into the attack, but England
openers made use of the first six overs. At the end of the first six overs,
England women scored 48 runs.
A superb piece of wicketkeeping by Richa Ghosh ended in the
wicket of Wyatt via review. The umpire gave it not out and the decision was overturned
to out as it hit the edge. Wyatt and Beaumont added 56 runs for the opening
wicket. Nat Sciver looked in great touch right from ball one putting the Indian
bowlers under serious pressure. On other hand, Tammy Beaumont struggled with
her timing and was caught by Smriti Mandhana at the boundary.
Nat Sciver dominated the Indian bowling and showed some class
hitting boundaries at will. Deepti Sharma produced a brilliant piece of
fielding getting run-out Heather Knight on her own bowling to leave England
women in some trouble. Amy Jones started cautiously giving the strike to Nat Sciver
before both batters took the attack to Indian bowlers with great hitting. Jones
took on Indian spinners and kept on the pressure. Sciver reached her fifty off just
24 balls laying a great foundation for a big total. Shikha Pandey grabbed 3
wickets in the 19th over including wickets of Nat Sciver, Amy Jones,
and Sophia Dunkley.
A sensational diving catch by Harmanpreet Kaur at long-on resulted
in the wicket of Sciver. Sciver and Jones added 78 runs for the 4th
wicket. Another brilliant piece of catching by Harleen Deol dismissed Amy Jones.
Richa Gosh produced a great stumping to get rid the wicket of Dunkley.
Sophia Ecclestone hit a six off Deepti Sharma in the final
over before Katherine Brunt was run-out while taking a single. England women
posted a daunting total of 177 for 7 in 20 overs.
Chasing 178 runs to win, Indian women got off to the worst possible
start as Shafali Verma gave room and was castled by Kathrine Brunt. Smriti
Mandhana looked in brilliant touch putting pressure on the England bowlers while
Deol tried to hit boundaries but could not connect. Mandhana was not able to
keep the shot down giving a simple catch to Ecclestone at the boundary. Mandhana
and Deol added 44 runs for the 2nd wicket. With that wicket of
Mandhana, Indian women ended first six overs at 44 for 2.
Kaur’s poor form continued as she was dismissed by Sarah
Glenn coming down the track providing an easy catch to Ecclestone. With Indian
women needing to be 73 in 8.4 overs, Indian women fell short of the target by
18 runs as rain fell.
With this win, England women take an 8-4 lead in the
multi-points system. For her brilliant 55 off 27 balls, Nat Sciver was awarded
the player of the match. The second match of the series will be played at Hove
on Sunday.
