Ireland registered first win over South Africa in ODIs
The Ireland Cricket Team stunned South Africa in the 2nd One-day international match played at Malahide, Dublin on Tuesday.
South African captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and decided
to field first. Paul Stirling and Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie started off aggressively
putting pressure on the South African bowlers. Stirling was dropped twice. At
the end of the first 10 overs, Ireland scored 49 for 0.
After the field restrictions, Keshav Maharaj got the breakthrough
for South Africa dismissing Paul Stirling to end a solid 64 runs opening partnership.
Andy McBrine was promoted to number 3 and gave good support to Balbirnie. Balbirnie
looked in brilliant touch reaching a half-century off 51 balls.
Shamsi got rid of McBrine to end 60 runs partnership for the
2nd wicket. Harry Tector came to the crease and never allowed the
South African bowlers to settle. Balbirnie and Tector upped the ante scoring runs
at a quick pace making life tough for the visitors. Ireland captain led from
front reaching century off 114 balls while Tector completed fifty off just 51
balls. Rabada dismissed Ireland captain Balbirnie as both put on 70 runs for
the 3rd wicket.
Dockrell and Tector looked in sensational touch hitting
boundaries at will keeping the momentum going on for Ireland. Phehlukawyo dismissed
Tector and then Dockrell of the last ball to help Ireland post a competitive total
of 290 for 5. Tector and Dockrell added 90 runs for the 4th wicket.
Chasing 291 runs to win, Janneman Malan looked in great
touch hitting boundaries. Craig Young got the breakthrough dismissing Aiden Markram
with an easy catch to McBrine. Malan played with great intent putting the
Ireland bowlers under pressure. At the end of the first 10 overs, South Africa
made 51 for 1.
Soon after field restrictions, Joshua Little struck for
Ireland dismissing South Africa captain Bavuma cheaply. Janneman Malan and
Rassie Van der Dussen steadied the ship for the visitors taking singles and keeping
the scoreboard ticking. Malan reached fifty off 51 balls keeping composure
along with Dussen. Dockrell provided the much-needed breakthrough for Ireland
dismissing dangerous Malan who tried to clear the boundary providing a simple catch
to Adair. Malan and Dussen added 108 runs for the 3rd wicket.
In the very next over, McBrine got the wicket of Dussen via
a review. The umpire gave it out and the decision was upheld. The Ireland
bowlers kept on the pressure taking wickets at regular intervals to bowl out South
Africa for 247 in 48.1 overs.
It was a historic moment for Ireland as they registered
their first ODI win over South Africa. South Africa took a 1-0 lead series with
the first match being washed out due to rain.
For his 102 off 117 balls, Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie was
named the man of the match.
