Tokyo Olympics 2020: Groups announced for Indian shuttlers

The excitement is almost over as three Indian shuttlers including PV Sindhu, Sai Praneeth, and the men’s doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty will feature in prestigious tournament starting from 24th July played at the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza.

PV Sindhu who won the silver medal during the 2016 Rio Olympics has been placed with Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi and Israel’s Ksenia Polikarpova in Group J. The Indian would fancy her chances to top the group making it into the round of 16 matches. The top player in each group will qualify for the knockout stages.

The men’s singles star Sai Praneeth will take on Mark Calijouw of Netherlands and Misha Zilberman of Israel in the league stage. Sai would be looking to play attacking badminton and top the pool making it into the next round.

Satiwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty has been placed in Group A along with Sanjaya Sukamujo and Marcus Gideon of Indonesia, Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin of Chinese Taipei, Ban Lane, and Sean Vendy of England. The Indian pairing would be looking to prove their worth against top pairs of the world and move into the quarterfinals.

PV Sindhu must face many top-quality players from the knockout stages if she prevails in the first round. It is going to be a great challenge for Indian shuttlers to prove their mettle on the big stage and bring glory.

With Carolina Marin not featuring in Tokyo Olympics due to injury, PV Sindhu has a great chance to go another step. She would likely face Tai Tzu Ying, Intanon, Yamaguchi, Okuhara. All these three Indian shuttlers need to show great fight and make sure that they move into the next round with top performances.

The three Indian shuttlers did not get much match time due to COVID. PV Sindhu is the best bet in badminton and hopes that she can bring gold.
