West Indies versus Australia 1st T20I: West Indies bowlers leads to a remarkable win
It was an amazing game of cricket as West Indies showed
great fight and character to win the first T20I played at St Lucia, Gros Islet on
Friday.
Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to
field first. It was an ideal start for the visitors as Josh Hazlewood got rid
of Evin Lewis without opening his account. Chris Gayle looked out of sorts as he
struggled against the good quality bowling of Australia. Lendl Simmons showed some
intent putting pressure on the bowlers. Hazelwood got the big wicket of Gayle to
leave West Indies in some trouble. At the end of the first six overs, West
Indies scored 24 for 2.
After the field restrictions, Mitchell Marsh grabbed the
wicket of Lendl Simmons to leave West Indies in big trouble. Nicolas Pooran and
Shimron Hetymer provides some resistance putting on 30 runs for the 4th
wicket. A big mix-up resulted in the run out of Pooran. Moises Henriques dropped
a chance to get rid of Russell. After the drop chance, Russell hit some massive
sixes to put pressure back on Australian bowling. Hetymer innings came to end
as Starc took an easy catch. Russell and Hetymer added 36 runs for the 5th
wicket.
Russell was in some form hitting sixes at will putting Australian
under pressure and reached his maiden T20I fifty off 26 balls. He was
eventually dismissed for a brilliant 51 off 26 balls with 3 fours and 5 sixes.
His innings helped West Indies post 145 for 6 in 20 overs. For Australia, Hazlewood
was the pick of bowlers with 3 for 12 in 4 overs.
Chasing 146 runs to win, Australian captain Aaron Finch was
dismissed cheaply by Fabien Allen providing an easy catch to Evin Lewis.
Matthew Wade and Mitchell Marsh put the West Indies bowlers under pressure with
massive sixes. After being smashed for runs, Russell dismissed Wade as Hetymer took
an easy catch at the boundary. Wade and Marsh added 38 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Obed McCoy grabbed the wicket of Joshua Philippe off his first ball to
leave Australia struggling. At the end of the first six overs, Australia raced away
to 70 for 3.
Moises Henriques and Marsh kept on hitting runs with ease to
make the equation in favor of Australia. Fabien Allen got the wicket of
Henriques ending 36 runs partnership for the 4th wicket. Mitchell
Marsh looked in decent touch and completed maiden T20I fifty off 29 balls.
Hayden Walsh Junior dismissed Ben McDermott with a beauty. He then grabbed
Mitchell Marsh’s wicket with a simple return catch to the bowler to leave
Australia in trouble.
Mcoy took the wicket of Ashton Agar and put the Australian
batsmen under pressure. Walsh Junior struck again to get dismiss Daniel Christian.
A sensational catch by Fabien Allen at the boundary resulted in the wicket of
Mitchell Starc. Mcoy ended the match by grabbing Hazlewood wicket to help West
Indies win the match by 18 runs.
West Indies 145 for 6 in 20 overs (Russell 51, Simmons 27,
Hazlewood 3/12) beat Australia 127 in 16 overs (Mitchell Marsh 51, Wade 33,
McCoy 4/26, Walsh 3/21) by 18 runs.
For his 4 for 26 in 4 overs, Obed McCoy was awarded the man
of the match. West Indies take 1-0 lead in 5 match series. The second T20I will
be played on 10th July.
