Tokyo Olympics 2020: Indian men’s hockey team reach semi-finals
The Indian men’s hockey team defeated Great Britain in a thrilling 4th quarterfinal played at the Oi Hockey Stadium, North Pitch on Sunday.
Great Britain began the first quarter on an aggressive note,
but the Indian defenders blocked the shot and regained possession. A superb
pass by Simranjeet Singh and Dilpreet Singh converted into a goal in the 7th
minute to give India a 1-0 lead. Great Britain put the Indian defense under
pressure and kept them on the backfoot. It was an amazing performance by both
teams as India ended the first quarter at 1-0.
The Indian men’s hockey team got off to an ideal start as
Gurjant Singh received the pass inside the circle in the 16th minute
to give them a 2-0 lead. Dilpreet Singh was awarded green and had to sit out for
2 minutes. Despite Great Britain pressing hard, the Indian defense remained calm.
At the end of the first half, India led 2-0.
Rupinder Pal Singh was shown a green card by the umpire at the start of the 3rd quarter. Great Britain put enough pressure on Indian
defense. Soon after, Liam Ansell also received a green card to the level playing
field. Great Britain dominated the possession and looked in complete control.
They finally got the result by earning 3 back-to-back penalty corners. Despite
saving the first 2 penalty corners, Samuel Ward converted a rebound shot into the goal in the 45th minute to make it 1-2 in favor of India.
Great Britain began the fourth quarter on an aggressive note
as they earned a penalty corner but were not able to do anything with it. GB earned
another PC, but this time P Sreejesh saved from going into a goal. The Indian
captain Manpreet Singh was given a yellow card for the diving tackle. GB striker
made another attempt on goal, but Sreejesh saved another superb goal.
Nilkanata won the ball and initiated a counterattack as Hardik
shot was saved by the GB goalkeeper but a rebound smashed it into a goal in 57th
minute to give India a 3-1 lead. Great Britain removed the goalkeeper and then received
a yellow card. India played their hearts out winning it 3-1.
With this win, India reached the semi-finals of the Olympics
after a long time. They will now face Belgium in 1st semi-finals.
