Tokyo Olympics 2020: Indian men’s team clinch historic medal
The Indian men’s team produced a great game of hockey as produced stunning to clinch historic medal against Germany played at the Oi Hockey Stadium, North Pitch on Thursday.
It was a perfect start for the German side as Timour Oruz scored
in the 2nd minute itself as the Indian defense lacked coordination.
After the initial attack, Germany went down to 10 players receiving a green card. The
Indian team earned a penalty corner, but Rupinder Pal Singh shot was not great. Groose
almost converted chance into a goal. Germany earned 3 back-to-back penalty
corners but the Indian defense remained solid. At the end of the first quarter, Germany
took a 1-0 lead.
India got off to a great start as Simranjeet Singh produced a superb reverse flick from a pass by Nilkanata in the 17th minute to
help the Indian team level the scores at 1-1. Germany then pressed hard putting
pressure on the Indian defense. Another piece of problem by defense from India
helped Ruhr gave a pass to Niklas Wellen converting into a goal in the 24th
minute giving Germany a 2-1 lead. In the very next minute, Surinder Kumar was not
able to control as Benedikt scored a field goal to extend Germany’s lead to
3-1.
The Indian team scored as a brilliant save by German
goalkeeper but rebound shot by Hardik Singh in the 27th minute
helped them reduce one goal. Rupinder Pal Singh scored from a forceful penalty
corner in the 29th minute to level the scores at 3-3 and ended first
half at 3-3.
Thanks to an aggressive play, the Indian was awarded a
penalty stroke and Rupinder Pal Singh did the job in the 31st minute
to give India a 4-3 lead. A superb play by Gurjant Singh and a great pass to Simranjeet
Singh in the 34th minute gave India 2 goals cushion. The Indian team continued
their aggressive play and earned penalty corners as the German team was with 10
players. At the end of the third quarter, India led 5-3.
Germany started the 4th quarter on a positive
note as Luke Windfieder converted penalty corner as P Sreejesh was not able to
stop the goal in the 48th minute to reduce the goal difference at 1. The
umpire gave Tobias Hauke a yellow card and had to sit down. Mandeep Singh was
not able to convert one to one goal as the German goalkeeper did a superb job. The
German team put enough pressure on the Indian defense earning penalty corner,
but P Sreejesh was up to the mark denying Germany an equalizer.
Manpreet Singh went off the field due to injury and came
back. Germany was awarded a penalty corner at the last minute, but P Sreejesh
produced a superb save to help the Indian team win a thriller by 5-4.
The Indian men’s team created history as they earned their
medal in Olympics after a gap of 41 years. It was an amazing performance by the
hockey team who showed great character and fight back to comeback from 1-3 down
and won the match by 5-4.
