Brendon Taylor ends his international career with a low score
One of the finest cricketers that Zimbabwe has produced, Brendon Taylor decided to take retirement from the international circuit during the ongoing 3rd One-day international against Ireland played at Belfast on Monday.
The match did not start on time due to rain. After lots of
delays, Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie won the toss and decided to field first.
Coming to open the innings in his last international match, Taylor
tried to play a big slog and was castled by Joshua Little at the score of 7 runs
off 12 deliveries. His performances for Zimbabwe Cricket have been nothing
short of brilliant.
Taylor made his Test debut for Zimbabwe on 6th
May 2004 against Sri Lanka. He played a total of 34 matches with 2320 runs from
68 innings with 6 centuries and 12 half-centuries. His career-best score was
171. In November 2018, the wicketkeeper-batsman became the first Zimbabwean
cricketer to hit back-to-back centuries in Tests on two occasions.
He did a brilliant job as a wicketkeeper with 30 catches and
0 Stumpings. His last match in Zimbabwean colors was against Bangladesh in
July 2021. After the poor performances during the 2011 World Cup, Taylor was appointed
as the captain of the Test team taking over Chigbumra.
His performances in the limited-overs series led Zimbabwe to
famous wins. He made his ODI debut for Zimbabwe on 20th April 2004
and played a total of 205 matches (203 innings) with a career-best score of 145.
During the 2015 World Cup, Taylor hit 2 back-to-back
centuries, once against Ireland with 121 off 91 balls and then in the last
group game against India. After that match, Taylor decided to retire from
international cricket. His wicketkeeping created a great impact for Zimbabwe with
132 catches and 29 stumpings.
Brendon Taylor made his T20I debut for Zimbabwe against
Bangladesh on 28th November 2006. He played a total of 44 matches (44
innings) and scored 747 runs with a career-best score of 60. During 2007
World T20, Taylor was a part of the winning team helping Zimbabwe stun Australia. His
career-best score of 60 and great performance with gloves made him the man of
the match.
Taylor captained Zimbabwe side during the 3 matches T20I
series against Pakistan this year. His captaincy was superb defending 118 runs
on a tough batting pitch. Despite that brilliant performance, the hosts lost
the series by 1-2.
Zimbabwe could only manage 131 runs in 34 overs with captain Craig Ervine top scorer with 57. Ireland was given target after lots of rain delays and eventually won the match easily by 7 wickets via the DLS method. With this, Ireland equaled the series at 1-1.
