CPL 2021: Trinbago Knight Riders and Guyana Amazon Warriors involved in first Super Over
It was an amazing game of cricket as Trinbago Knight Riders and Guyana Amazon Warriors did not have anything to separate in a low scoring thriller played at Warner Park, St Kitts on Wednesday.
Guyana captain Nicolas Pooran won the toss and decided to
field first. Chanderpaul Hemraj dismissed the dangerous Lendl Simmons cheaply
without opening his account. Sunil Narine and Tion Webster steadied the ship with
some lovely shots to put pressure on the opposition. The experienced Mohammad
Hafeez got two wickets in the same over getting rid of Narine and Webster. Narine
and Webster added 39 runs for the 2nd wicket. Knight Riders scored
46 for 3 at the first six overs.
Imran Tahir and Hafeez troubled Knight Riders batsmen
especially Munro and Seifert. Guyana bowlers made sure that they kept pressure
with dot balls. Seifert's struggle came to end as he made 4 off 16 balls. On the
other hand, Munro looked decent with his strokes. Munro and Seifert added 32
runs for the 4th wicket.
Guyana bowlers did not allow Knight Riders batsmen to score
runs easily. Tahir dismissed Colin Munro off his last ball. Romario Shephard
made an important breakthrough getting the wicket of Pollard to rattle Knight
Riders.
Isuru Udana provided some impetus for Knight Riders with a
quickfire cameo 21 off 9 balls. Romario Shephard got wickets of Denesh Ramdin
and Udana. Akeal Hossain and Rampaul hit vital runs in the final over to help
Knight Riders post 138 for 9.
Chasing 139 runs to win, it was not an ideal start as
Warriors lost 2 early wickets of Hemraj and Odean Smith cheaply. The
experienced Mohammad Hafeez struggled with his timing along with Shimron
Hetymer. At the end of the first six overs, the Warriors made 30 for 2.
Knight Riders bowlers kept tight lines and lengths keeping
pressure on Warriors batsmen. Hafeez's struggle came to an end with climbing run
rate. Shoaib Malik also could not maintain the timing and dismissed cheaply. In
the same over, Narine got rid of Hetymer to leave Warriors in big trouble at 68
for 5.
Brandon King and Nicolas Pooran eased off some pressure with
18 runs from Pierre over. Rampaul took 2 wickets in the same dismissing King
and then a one-handed catch by Hosein at the boundary. King and Pooran added 37
runs for the 6th wicket.
Romario Shepherd and Naveen UL Haq provided some late
hitting giving Guyana Amazon Warriors hope of winning the match. The match went
right down the wire as Hosein dismissed Shepherd to provide great
entertainment.
With 2 runs required off 1 delivery, Imran Tahir was run out
trying to take the second run as the match went into the Super Over.
Sunil Narine did a sensational job in the Super Over
grabbing wickets of Pooran and Hetymer conceding only 1 boundary setting a target of just 7 runs.
Romario Shepherd was handed the ball for Super Over and
dismissed Pollard off the first ball. Shephard held his nerves as he gave only
4 runs to help Guyana Amazon Warriors seal an amazing win.
Guyana Amazon Warriors 138 for 9 in 20 overs ( Pooran 27,
Hetymer 27, Rampaul 4/29) and 6 for 2 in 0.5 overs ( Hetymer 4, Narine 2/6)
beat Trinbago Knight Riders 138 for 9 in 20 overs ( Munro 32, Udana 21, Hafeez
