India versus England 4th Test 1st Day: Bowlers dominate day 1
The match went off to a great pace as both teams fast bowlers made good use of the conditions on the 1st day of fourth Test match played at Kennington Oval, London on Thursday.
England captain Joe Root won the toss and decided to bowl in
overcast conditions. KL Rahul looked in decent touch hitting boundaries off
James Anderson and Ollie Robinson. Rohit Sharma left the ball brilliantly. After
the initial spell by Anderson, Chris Woakes was bought into attack and troubled
Rohit with pace and bounce. He eventually got rid of Rohit with a lifting
delivery. The Indian openers added 28 runs for the opening wicket.
Joe Root decided to review for LBW decision, but it was
retained as not out. After the first drinks break, Robinson got rid of KL Rahul but
this time the decision went in favor of England leaving India in some trouble.
Woakes and Robinson did not allow Indian batsmen to score runs easily keeping
tight lines and lengths.
Anderson produced a peach to dismiss Cheteshwar Pujara
leaving India in deep trouble. The Indian captain Virat Kohli showed some class
putting the bad deliveries for boundaries. Ravindra Jadeja was promoted ahead
of Rahane. The England bowlers kept asking tough questions to Jadeja before the
lunch break. India went into the lunch break at 54 for 3.
Soon after the lunch break, Virat Kohli looked in decent touch
but was given a reprieve by Joe Root at slips. Ravindra Jadeja survived few
anxious moments before Woakes produced peach to get rid of Jadeja as Root did
not drop this chance at slips. Jadeja and Kohli added 30 runs for the 4th
wicket.
Ajiyanka Rahane decided to review for LBW as the umpire gave him
out, but the decision was overturned to not out as the ball was missing leg stump.
The Indian captain Virat Kohli looked in great touch hitting some shots and
reached his fifty off 85 balls. Soon after reaching half-century, Robinson
dismissed Kohli making life tough for India. Kohli and Rahane added 36 runs for
the 5th wicket.
Rahane was given caught as Moeen Ali's good low catch after
the umpires decided to check the decision to leave the Indian team in dire trouble. India
went into the tea break in trouble at 122 for 6.
It was not an ideal start for India at the start of the third
session as Pant was dismissed cheaply by Woakes. Shardul Thakur came out of nowhere
putting England bowlers under pressure hitting boundaries keeping the
scoreboard ticking. England fielding was not up to the mark as they dropped
catches.
Shardul Thakur showed class and kept the scoreboard ticking with
big shots making life tough for England bowlers. Thakur smashed Robinson for
runs to complete fifty off 31 balls. He was eventually dismissed via review for
LBW. The umpires gave it not out and on review, it was overturned to out. Thakur
and Yadav added 63 runs for the 8th wicket.
Craig Overton dropped a chance at slips but Burns produced a run-out to dismiss Bumrah. A superb one-handed catch by Bairstow resulted in India
being bowled out for 191.
Jasprit Bumrah produced two big wickets dismissing both
England openers Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed. Burns was bowled taking the
inside edge onto the stumps while Pant took a good catch to dismiss Hameed
leaving England in trouble.
Umesh Yadav, Siraj, and Shardul Thakur struggled for their rhythm
as Root and Malan took the advantage of bad deliveries. Before the end of the day’s
play, Umesh Yadav produced a peach to dismiss England captain Joe Root. Root
and Malan added 46 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Craig Overton was sent as the nightwatchman and survived a
dangerous over by Jasprit Bumrah. India made a comeback reducing England to 53
for 3 including the big wicket of Root.
England 53 for 3 in 17 overs ( Malan 26*, Root 21, Bumrah
2/15, Yadav 1/15) trail India 191 in 61.3 overs ( Shardul Thakur 57, Kohli 50,
Woakes 4/55, Robinson 3/38) by 138 runs.
